Prescribed Burns Planned
The U.S. Forest Service will soon start annual prescribed burning operations on the Angeles National Forest to reduce the risk of wildfire to people and communities across the Southland. These efforts will foster a healthier ecosystem and minimize the effects of large wildfires on the landscape.
These projects are part of a continuing effort to reduce the threat of wildfire and improve forest health. The prescribed fire program will continue through the winter and spring months as weather and other environmental factors permit.
Prescribed fires include both understory and pile burning to reduce the amount of vegetation, such as needles, small plants, brush, and small trees which can carry fire from the forest floor into the treetops.
The ignition of all prescribed burns is dependent on the availability of personnel, equipment and appropriate conditions. Prescribed burn planning and execution are closely coordinated with the National Weather Service and Air Quality Management Districts in order to manage smoke production and minimize impacts as much as possible.
Grants Available for Seismic Retrofit
Registration opened this week for eligible homeowners to receive grants of up to $3,000 for seismic retrofits of their older homes, making them more resistant to earthquake damage. Homeowners have until Feb. 23 to apply for a grant from the Earthquake Brace + Bolt (EBB) program.
The California Earthquake Authority (CEA) has provided $6 million in funding for the grants this year, enough to support an additional 2,000 or more code-compliant seismic retrofits.
Homes with qualifying retrofits are eligible for discounts of up to 20% on CEA earthquake insurance premiums.
Continuing through Feb. 23, eligible homeowners can apply for retrofit funding at EarthquakeBraceBolt.com, where they can also find detailed program information, select a licensed FEMA-trained contractor and view the full list of eligible zip codes, which includes Glendale and La Crescenta.
