Gather, Inspire and Act and the Montrose Peace Vigil present “I Am Not Your Negro” on Friday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church. Directed by Raoul Peck and narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, it is a piercing look into the deep and tenacious roots of racism in our nation. Based on James Baldwin’s manuscript documenting his close connections with Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and MLK, the film offers plenty of visuals that underscore our culture’s reinforcement of racial divide and domination. Jackson’s reading of Baldwin’s words and actual film footage of the author provide a portrait of unflinching honesty and courage.
Doors open at 7 p.m.; film begins at 7:30 p.m.
Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church, 2700 Montrose Ave. in Montrose.
