Flood Control Fire Related Sediment Hauling

In preparation for winter storms, LA County Public Works will be hauling sediment from various flood and debris control facilities affected by the 2017

La Tuna Fire to the Dunsmuir Sediment Placement Site (SPS) in the city of

Glendale/La Crescenta. Dunsmuir SPS is an engineered regional site that has been used by the County to deposit sediment since the 1950s.

Flood and debris control facilities, located below burned areas, will require ongoing maintenance during this storm season. An initial sediment and debris haul was planned between Oct. 2 and Nov. 17, 2017. It is critical to restore the capacity of these facilities to ensure they continue to provide increased protection for downhill communities. Residents may experience a visible County presence and truck traffic near Dunsmuir SPS throughout the storm season if additional cleanouts and hauling operations are necessary.

County crews will work from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and on Saturdays as needed during the storm season.

The County will apply several best management practices along the haul route and at Dunsmuir SPS to control dust during hauling activities, including the use of water trucks and street sweepers. Additionally, traffic flaggers and information signs will be used as needed to maintain traffic flow and safety along the haul route.

It is important that County crews have unobstructed access to Dunsmuir SPS. Residents in the area are asked to avoid parking vehicles or storing materials on streets near Dunsmuir SPS during hauling operations. Parking restrictions (if necessary) will be posted 48 hours in advance.
