Beginning March 18, all residents and businesses in La Cañada Flintridge served by Valley Water Company, La Cañada Irrigation District, and Mesa Crest Water Company are asked to refrain from all outdoor water use, including irrigating lawns and landscaping, for up to 10 days as an imported water pipeline inspection occurs. Residents are also asked to reduce indoor use where possible.

About 13,000 feet of Foothill Municipal Water District’s pipe, starting near the Rose Bowl and ending in La Cañada Flintridge will undergo inspection during this period. The work requires halting imported water deliveries so that a robot may be lowered into the pipe to conduct an inspection. The results of the inspection will assist FMWD in determining any need for rehabilitation work. By inspecting and rehabilitating the pipe before there is a leak, emergency shutdowns and costlier repairs are avoided.

“We request that all customers conserve water to ensure adequate supplies for the duration of the shutdown,” stated General Manager Nina Jazmadarian. “During this period, our water utilities will rely on local water and other stored supplies to meet demands.”

Water agencies will alert customers by changing the Conservation Alert Status to (Red) Critical Conservation. Under this alert, watering or irrigating of lawn, landscape or other vegetated area with potable water is prohibited.

“The Critical Conservation alert sends a strong signal to La Cañada Flintridge residents to conserve water,” added District Engineer Ken Herman. “We carefully coordinated and planned for taking the imported pipeline out of service. However, out of an abundance of caution, we request that residents heighten water conservation activities during this period.”

As soon as normal imported water service is restored, signage will be changed back to (Blue) Normal Conservation where customers are asked to adhere to the Governor’s call for Conservation as a Way of Life.
