John Lockwood Hales, M.D. passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, March 21. He was 82 years of age.

Dr. Hales practiced anesthesiology at Saint Joseph Medical Center for 38 years and was beloved by patients, medical staff and fellow physicians. He was instrumental in starting the first open heart surgery program at Saint Joseph. In addition to his dedication to his medical practice, Dr. Hales was known for his energy and zest for life. He valued his family and many friendships and loved to serve and mentor whenever he saw the opportunity.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marilyn Brimhall Hales, five children, 19 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 26 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in La Crescenta where Dr. Hales was a longtime member and served as bishop of his congregation for five years.
