Glendale has a new mayor in town after the now former mayor Vartin Gharpetian finished out his one-year term. He has passed the title to his colleague Zareh Sinanyan. This is his second term as mayor, having been selected in 2014-15.

“As with my previous mayorship, the following one will be a year of inclusiveness, of working cooperatively together with my colleagues on the dais for the benefit of Glendale and its residents,” Sinanyan said in his acceptance speech.

Sinanyan was unanimously selected after being nominated by councilmember Paula Devine and seconded by Gharpetian. There were no other nominations.

Sinanyan has worked within for the city since 2006 when he was appointed to the Parks, Recreation and Community Service Commission. He has also served on the Community Development Block Grant Advisory Committee from 2009 to 2011, and as chairman in 2008 and commissioner in 2013. Sinanyan was elected to the Glendale City Council in 2013 and is noted as the first Armenian-born politician to sit on the city’s council.
