Finishing April in Style
As promised last week, I’m going to share with you some events that have happened or are planned for this month of woe for taxpayers.
The first event was one of personal joy for my family: the arrival home of our youngest son Danny.
As most of you remember, Danny – or Airman Goldsworthy – graduated from Air Force basic training in December, then headed to north Texas (Sheppard Air Force Base) for extensive training on the A-10 Warthog. He finished training last week and, before being deployed to Georgia for munitions work, he came home for two weeks to work with the recruitment office here.
To say that we all were excited to see Danny would be an understatement. He looks great and seems to be happy. I’m a proud momma.
Then on Saturday, my son Matthew and I headed over to Crescenta Valley High School for the Special Olympics Tri Valley Games. (I’ll be sharing the story with you in next week’s paper.) I had originally intended to stick around for an hour or so, but from the moment the athletes took to the field for their procession, I was hooked. Bocce ball, distance races, basketball … these sports and more were tackled by these well-trained athletes. It was so encouraging – and exciting – to see them compete. I’m glad I was able to share in their victories and their attempts.
On Sunday, Steve and I headed to the beach at Pt. Hueneme (why-ne-me) to soak up some sun or, as Steve said, some Vitamin D. It was windy and a little too cold for my liking, so we left mid-afternoon.
But it won’t be too cold for the next big event in town: the Hometown Country Fair! Temperatures will be fair-ready on Saturday as the CV Chamber of Commerce prepares to welcome thousands of folks ready to see the classic cars, take part in a pie-eating contest, watch the pups on parade, choose between a variety of food trucks, sing karaoke, congratulate first responders and check out the dozens of vendors at CV Park (3901 Dunsmore Ave. at Honolulu). This is such a fun event – and I’ve been involved since the first one! I know you’ll have a good time. What is really great is that the fair is free to attend – seriously! Imagine having a family-friendly event that costs nothing to attend. Yes, we’re pretty lucky.
The month finishes with bingo games all around town! There’s a game hosted Saturday night by the Glendale Kiwanis Club and next weekend the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge and Prom Plus are hosting games on Friday and Saturday. Looking ahead to June, the CV 4th of July Fireworks committee is hosting two games.
Perhaps most importantly is that these events all benefit local organizations. Plan now to attend one – or all!
