37 … and Counting and Did Someone Say
Yesterday, April 25, Steve and I celebrated 37 years of marriage. I thought only old people were married for 37 years, but apparently I was wrong.
Thinking back to when we were first married, it’s hard to comprehend how much we’ve gone through – the birth of four children, maintaining two businesses (one I’m in the middle of right now), the deaths of parents and my sibling, a marriage and a divorce (of one our sons) and much more. I was married in April, turned 21 in May and was pregnant in June. I kid that the reason we got pregnant so soon is because God knew we couldn’t keep it together without the glue that a child can bring to a marriage. I think there’s some truth to that because it was seven years before we were blessed with Matthew, then Andrew and Daniel.
And it’s hard not to question where all that time went.
In celebration of our anniversary, tonight we’re heading to The Rose in Pasadena for a performance by the Fab Four, a stellar Beatles cover band. We’ve seen the Fab Four before at the Starlight Bowl in Burbank during that venue’s summer performances. If they’re as good at The Rose as at the Starlight Bowl, we won’t be disappointed.

One thing that has really caught on in popularity in our fair Crescenta Valley is bingo. It used to be hard to find a rousing game of bingo but many local nonprofits have discovered that the game is a great way to raise money and have fun. Initially, the veterans at the local American Legion/VFW held an annual big game in August over at Healy Hall at Holy Redeemer. A couple of hundred people would fill the Hall to nearly overflowing, eager for their chance at prize money, raffle (I mean opportunity drawing) items and, of course, seeing friends and neighbors.
Other nonprofits realized the value in hosting games and with the vets lending a hand (and their facility and their expertise) other nonprofits began hosting games benefitting their organizations. Previous bingos have been hosted by the CV Chamber of Commerce, the JROTC, the Sheriff’s Support Group and I think that CV Fireworks is hosting an upcoming two-day bingo bonanza.
On Saturday night, Prom Plus is having its game at the American Legion Hall (4011 La Crescenta Ave.). Tickets are only $15 and include four game cards for 10 games plus a dauber. Each game pays a minimum of $100 (multiple winners split the pot) plus there will be food for purchase and a 50/50 drawing. Tickets are available presale today and tomorrow at the offices of CV Weekly, 3800 La Crescenta Ave. #101 and the CV Chamber, 3131 Foothill Blvd. ‘D.’
I hope you come out and support Prom Plus and, in the process, win some money. I’ll be there and hope to see you, too!
