An exhibition of art works by members of the Glendale Art Association will be on display May 4 – May 20. Opening reception is Friday, May 4 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Photography and sculpture by members of the Glendale Art Association will be on display for sale at the Betsy Lueke Creative Art Center Gallery in Burbank. After that the works may be viewed from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The Gallery closes on Fridays at 7 p.m. and on Saturdays at 1 p.m. It is closed on Sunday.

BOHEMIAN ROMANCES ON MUSIQUES ROSTER
The next presentation of Salon de Musiques is on May 6 and is titled, “Bohemian Romances.” It is an exquisite program for voice, strings and piano that will celebrate two genius Czech and Croatian composers: Antonin Dvorak and Dora Pejacevic, including one U.S. premiere.
“Bohemian Romances” will be performed by Elissa Johnston, soprano, Tereza Stanislav, violin, Jonathan Moerschel, viola, Eric Byers, cello,
Sung Chang and Francois Chouchan, piano.
An informal Q&A with the artists will follow the performance and a gourmet high tea buffet provided by Patina that includes French champagne will be served.

GHS HOSTING RESTORATION EXPO
The Glendale Historical Society will present its annual Restoration Expo at the Glendale Civic Auditorium on May 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Restoration Expo will showcase dozens of exhibitor booths featuring restoration specialists and contractors, landscape and interior design professionals, period and reproduction tile and hardware suppliers, and many other valuable resources. There will also be presentations on the value and benefits of preservation.

SIERRA CLUB HOSTS ROGER KLEMM
The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club presents Roger Klemm’s, “Passion for Native Plants” on Tuesday, May 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library.
Klemm, a software engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, is involved with groups promoting conservation and environmentally sensible landscaping. He has renovated community and school gardens, planted trees in local parks and is introducing native plants on the campus where he works. He is involved with the eradication of invasive exotic plants in the Angeles National Forest and at the Rosemont Preserve. He spearheaded the renovation of the community entrance garden at Sunland Boulevard and the 210 Freeway at Sunland. He has a wealth of real-life knowledge of native plants, where and how they grow in the wild and how they can grace cultivated landscapes.
The program begins following news of conservation and outings. This is a free event and everyone is welcome. Refreshments will be served.

DAVIS, STANFORD AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE
On Sunday, May 6 at 4 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse hosts an event for Alison Carpenter Davis, editor of “Letters Home from Stanford: 125 Years of Correspondence from Students of Stanford University,” a book that evokes a sense of the heritage, history, and shared experience common to students across colleges, generations and the country.
This collection of handwritten and electronic correspondence covers a time when many leave home for the larger world, setting out to discover purpose, meaning, self – and how to do the laundry. Ultimately, this book is about being human.
Then on Thursday, May 10, at 7 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse hosts Craig Stanford, author of “The New Chimpanzee: A Twenty-First Century Portrait of Our Closest Kin.”
Recent discoveries about wild chimpanzees have re­shaped the understanding of these apes and their kinship with humans. Chimpanzees not only have genomes similar to humans but also plot political coups, wage wars over territory, pass on cultural traditions to younger generations and ruthlessly strategize for resources, including sexual partners. In “The New Chimpanzee,” Stanford challenges readers to let apes guide human inquiry into what it means to be human.

SUNLAND WOMAN’S CLUB MONTHLY LUNCHEON

LCWC PRESENTS ‘SALUTE TO THE DECADES’
All are invited for an evening of gangsters and flappers at the Speakeasy Bar, the wonderful life of the big bands, dancing to rock & roll, and reminiscing on Haight and Ashbury – all part of “Salute to the Decades!”
Check out the vintage cars and their vintage drivers. Have a photo taken, but don’t touch!
Attendees are encouraged to dress reflecting one of eras gone by – the ’20s are still roaring, the ’40s are fabulous, the ’50s vibrant and the ’60s very political. There may be a prize for those who look authentic.

HISTORIC STATUS ON PROGRAM AGENDA
Bolton Hall Museum’s May 12 Second Saturday program will help attendees learn if their home or nearby locations might achieve City of Los Angeles Cultural Historic Monument status. Bolton Hall was awarded LA’s Cultural Historical Monument No. 2 status in 1962, and the city has designated over 1,100 sites since then.
The program speaker, Charles J. Fisher, will share how to research a home’s status and where to find information online. Fisher has steered over 100 sites through the historic monument process and is an undisputed expert in the field.
This program is free and open to the public and everyone is welcome. It is at 1 p.m. at the Bolton Hall Museum, 10110 Commerce Ave. in Tujunga.

CALTECH PRESENTS SPRING CONCERT
Caltech Chamber Music Ensembles, directed by Maia Jasper White, present their annual Mothers’ Day Concert and Chamber Music Marathon. Works by Beethoven, Faure, Brahms, Vivaldi, Mozart and many more will be performed by Caltech’s multi-talented students.
Mothers’ Day Concert is Sunday, May 13 at 3:30 p.m. and the Caltech Chamber Music Marathon Concert is on Sunday, May 20 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

YMCA CELEBRATING 60TH ANNIVERSARY
The YMCA of the Foothills will host the 60th Anniversary Celebration Gala on Saturday, May 19 at the home of Sandy and Mike Kobeissi, longtime La Cañada residents. The evening will celebrate 60 years of charitable service to the foothills community and provide an opportunity for neighbors to share their stories from the past and connect with longtime friends.
Festivities will begin at 6 p.m. with notable attendees including community leaders, Chamber of Commerce board members, local law enforcement reps, local officials, and Y volunteer leadership. Congressman Adam Schiff, State Senator Anthony Portantino, and Representative Laura Friedman are among the invited honored guests.
Hearty hors d’oeuvres will be served and dessert.
Ron Pearson will emcee the event with music, laughter and dancing. Guests will receive special commemorative photos of their evening.

SUNLAND TUJUNGA PREPARES FOR 4TH OF JULY PARADE
The Sunland Tujunga Shadow Hills Rotary Club is again hosting the Sunland Tujunga 4th of July Parade. The parade will start at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 4 on Foothill Boulevard at Summitrose Street. The parade will run down Foothill Boulevard to Sunland Boulevard, and is free of charge for both participants and spectators.

LOCAL YOGA CLASS
Gentle/level one yoga classes continue on Friday mornings at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke’s of the Mountains Church.
This class will improve joint mobility, flexibility, muscle strength and balance and will include some restorative yoga poses to help the body heal its own aches and pains by engaging the parasympathetic system. A community support group for persons with fibromyalgia and/or arthritis meets monthly at La Cañada Presbyterian Church for personal and social support, and education in lifestyle management of these difficult medical issues.

The support group is open to caregivers, family members, friends and stroke survivors and will help with communication, education, and coping styles while building friendships, solving problems and sharing resources and experience.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY
The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.
All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS
The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).
Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m. This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.
The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
