‘Salute to the Decades’ Celebrates Days Gone

By Mary O’KEEFE

Everyone is invited to dance the night away at the La Crescenta Woman’s Club on Saturday night for the first ever-Salute to the Decades.

The 1920s, ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s will be well represented in entertainment, costumes and music.

“We were looking for something that would have interest to all ages, men and women both,” said event chair Jean Maluccio.

There will be music from the Big Band era through the doo-wops of the ‘50s and rock & roll of the ‘60s.

“We have the cast of Theatre Americana on stage from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. performing ‘50s [hits],” Maluccio added. “And Arthur Murray dancers will do demonstrations through the evening.”

Magician Mark Anthony will also be on hand to make the evening even more magical.

There will not be a sit-down dinner but lots of food will be offered that highlights the decades, including chicken pot pies and ham. Also served will, of course, be what 1904’s Ladies’ Home Journal touted as “America’s Favorite Dessert” – Jell-O.

“We will have a speakeasy bar with wines from headlines of the times,” Maluccio said.

Those volunteering at the event will be dressed in era costumes and those attending are invited to join in the fun.

“We encourage the community to come dressed in their favorite memory of the past,” she said.

There will be prizes for those wearing the best costume.

In addition, cars representing the 1930s to the 1960s will be on display in the parking lot of the woman’s club, with their drivers dressed to match the era of their cars, thanks to the Early Rodders.

Proceeds will go toward the philanthropic work of the La Crescenta Woman’s Club that supports many local non-profits and schools.

Tickets are $50 per person, and include refreshments and two cocktail tickets. There is a cash bar. To purchase tickets, email cvcoc@aol.com or call (818) 658-1104. Tickets purchased in advance will be placed into an opportunity drawing for a chance to win $50.

“Salute to the Decades” is at the La Crescenta Woman’s Club, 4004 La Crescenta Ave. It begins at 6 p.m.on Saturday.
