Caltech Chamber Music Ensembles, directed by Maia Jasper White, present their Chamber Music Marathon. Works by Beethoven, Faure, Brahms, Vivaldi, Mozart and many more will be performed by Caltech’s multi-talented students.
The Caltech Chamber Music Marathon Concert is on Sunday, May 20 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Concert will be held in Dabney Lounge on the Caltech campus.

VERDUGO HUUT ARTISANAL HOOTENANNY
The Unitarian Universalist Church of the Verdugo Hills has opened its acoustically outstanding 100-seat sanctuary to LA folk, alt-country, and acoustic musicians as well as authors, poets, and comedians for the monthly Verdugo HUUT. The theme for Friday, May 18 is “Reassurance & Despair.” Tickets are $5 for this teens-and-up performance.
Performers on May 18 include Brooklyn-born, L.A.-based musician Mitchell Schaffer, comedy trio Don’t Fight, You’re Both Pretty, and the return of The Countess, the creation of puppet performance artist Robyn Simms.

YMCA CELEBRATING 60TH ANNIVERSARY
The YMCA of the Foothills will host the 60th Anniversary Celebration Gala on Saturday, May 19 at the home of Sandy and Mike Kobeissi, longtime La Cañada residents. The evening will celebrate 60 years of charitable service to the foothills community and provide an opportunity for neighbors to share their stories from the past and connect with longtime friends.
Festivities will begin at 6 p.m. with notable attendees including community leaders, Chamber of Commerce board members, local law enforcement reps, local officials, and Y volunteer leadership. Congressman Adam Schiff, State Senator Anthony Portantino, and Representative Laura Friedman are among the invited honored guests.
Hearty hors d’oeuvres will be served and dessert.
Ron Pearson will emcee the event with music, laughter and dancing. Guests will receive special commemorative photos of their evening.

The Montrose and Burbank African Violet societies are having their annual A.V.S.A. judged show and sale on Saturday, May 19 at Descanso Gardens (Van de Kamp Hall).

DEMO CLUB HEARS RENEWABLE ENERGY AUTHOR
Craig R. Hover will address the Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club on “Renewable Energy and Sustainability” on Sunday, May 20. The meeting runs from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Visitor Center of the Lanterman House in La Cañada Flintridge.
Hover is a licensed professional engineer with a specialty in the development of renewable energy resources and author of the book “A World to Come Home To: Ending Global Warming in Our Lifetime.” He has proposed that global warming can end before 2050 and a sustainable and abundant world can be created in the process. But he finds there will be catastrophic consequences if we don’t stop the warming and the Arctic becomes ice-free.
In addition, judicial candidate Lucy Almendariz (Office #67) will be introduced with possible appearances by other candidates for the June 5 election. The Club has already endorsed Sandra Chen Lau, PCC Board Area 1 and Tony Cho, Judge Office #60.
The Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club serves the Crescenta Valley and Sunland-Tujunga. Members have participated in the La Cañada Fiesta Days Parade for years and are considering an entry in the 4th of July Parade in Sunland this year.

GYO PERFORMING AT ALEX THEATRE
The Glendale Youth Orchestra, conducted by Brad Keimach, performs its season finale concert of the 29th season on Sunday, May 20 at 7 p.m. at the Alex Theatre in Glendale. FIBROMYALGIA/ARTHRITIS SUPPORT GROUP
A community support group for persons with fibromyalgia and/or arthritis meets monthly at La Cañada Presbyterian Church for personal and social support, and education in lifestyle management of these difficult medical issues.
The support group is led by Dianne Whiting, MA, PT and Katie Phillips-Rector, MS, MFT intern.
The support group meets on the fourth Wednesday of every month from 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. in the Library. The next meeting is Wednesday, May 23 and will involve interactive Tai Chi instruction, and the organization of a medical notebook for monitoring health issues.

SIERRA CLUB CELEBRATES FOURTH OF JULY
The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club group celebrates the Fourth of July on Saturday, June 2 this year. Early planning in June celebrates National Trails Day as several members of the Crescenta Valley group are volunteers with the Glendale Trails and Open Spaces Foundation. The location will be as usual, Deukmejian Wilderness Park. The event, Brunch and Hike, will start at 8 a.m. with the hike led by leaders Bettie and Bobcat and watering trees along the way.

EDVARD GRIEG ON MUSIQUES ROSTER
The next presentation of Salon de Musiques is on June 3. “Edvard Grieg: A Lifelong Passion For A Muse” The presentation will also highlight the music of Jean Sibelius and Frank Bridge.
This is an exquisite program for voice, strings and piano and will be performed by seven virtuosos: So Young Park, soprano; Jessica Guideri and Ambroise Aubrun, violins; Jonathan Moerschel, viola; Jacob Braun, cello; David Kaplan and Francois Chouchan, piano. Dr. Ted Stern, a professor of music, is again conducting a series of music appreciation classes for adults in the community. This ongoing series is for non-musicians and musicians alike and explores the histories of composers and their music. THE PIONEERS OF EAGLE ROCK
Bolton Hall Museum’s Second Saturday program on June 9 at 1 p.m. tells the early history of the neighboring community of Eagle Rock. Today Eagle Rock is one of Los Angeles’ most distinctive neighborhoods. Program speakers are Eagle Rock historians and authors Eric Warren and Frank Parello. SUNLAND TUJUNGA PREPARES FOR 4TH OF JULY PARADE
The Sunland Tujunga Shadow Hills Rotary Club is again hosting the Sunland Tujunga 4th of July Parade. The parade will start at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 4 on Foothill Boulevard at Summitrose Street. The parade will run down Foothill Boulevard to Sunland Boulevard, and is free of charge for both participants and spectators.

LOCAL YOGA CLASS
Gentle/level one yoga classes continue on Friday mornings at 10:30 a.m. at St. Luke’s of the Mountains Church.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY
The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.
All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS
The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m. This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.
The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
