Keeping Up With Termites

Dear Phyllis,
I am a widow and have owned my home for more than twenty years. Last year, my gardener cut down a couple of trees and we stacked the firewood in my driveway. My son-in-law was recently visiting and thought he saw termite swarms near the firewood. He wants me to get a termite inspection. I am not thinking of selling anytime soon, so my question is whether or not I need to be worried about this now? Sandy

Dear Sandy,
Firewood that sits for an extended period of time, becomes moist, soft, and starts to decompose. These conditions greatly increase the chances that your firewood will become infested by termites. Always keep firewood away from your home. Firewood should be elevated on a metal rack, or even stacked on pallets, which are elevated by cinder blocks. Covering the wood with a tarp will prevent it from getting wet and retaining moisture.

Termites are very common in Southern California. They are extremely destructive pests, which cause billions of dollars in damage each year. Termites primarily feed on wood, but can also damage paper, books, insulation, etc. These crawling insects can cause major structural damage to your home in just a few months, and can completely destroy a home in several years. Southern California homeowners should have their home inspected annually for termites.

Your home is at greatest risk during termite season, which happens during the early months of spring. During this period, winged termites leave their nest to start a new colony.

Sandy, contact a reputable termite company and have them come to your home and perform an inspection, as part of routine maintenance. If you need a recommendation, feel free to contact me.
