YWCA Glendale is offering Camp Rosie free of charge to all participants as a part of a long-anticipated relaunch of the girls empowerment program, co-sponsored this year by Glendale’s Commission on the Status of Women and Soroptimist International of Glendale.
Named after Rosie the Riveter, Camp Rosie is a two-week summer day camp that provides seventh to ninth grade girls opportunities to learn trades and skills not often taught to young girls, as well as make connections with woman entrepreneurs and role models. As experts on the subject, YWCA Glendale will also provide workshops on healthy-relationship-building and bystander intervention.
Campers will have hands-on exposure to STEM and trade activities and take part in service learning projects that connect campers to issues affecting the greater Glendale community. YWCA Glendale is partnering with local agencies, including AGBU GenNext, Harmony Aikido, LA Kitchen, Junior Achievement of Southern California, Exhale to Inhale, Institute for Girl’s Development, Women’s Center for Creative Work, California Science Center and Girl Power Sketch. Activities include entrepreneurship training, comedy sketch writing, orienteering, bike maintenance, and field trips to USC and the California Science Museum.
Camp Rosie offers two summer sessions: Session 1 is from July 9-July 20 and Session 2 is from July 23-Aug. 3. Sessions are Mondays-Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Session 1 is full but Session 2 is still accepting applications until July 16. Contact Camp director, Devon Malick, at devonmalick@glendaleywca.org for more information.
Camp takes place at YWCA Glendale, 735 E. Lexington Drive in Glendale.
