The Good People of S-T
I know this might seem a little dated since July 4 was more than a week ago, but I wanted to make sure that the efforts that went into local celebratory events were properly presented to our readers. You’ll find this week’s cover story is on the fireworks that were held at Crescenta Valley High School.
It is a Herculean effort that goes into organizing the annual Fourth of July fireworks display. The show is much more than 10-15 minutes of fireworks. It’s music, food, special guests, activities for children and more. It’s getting permits, securing food trucks, arranging security, greeting VIPs, choosing musical groups, ordering the sound system and, of course, purchasing the very best pyrotechnics.
The people who work so hard are all volunteers who donate their time to make sure that the Crescenta Valley has the finest fireworks display around. The community plays an integral role in the success of the day, too. Financial support is always needed and, in addition to major sponsors, it is the community that is called upon to round out the budget. Luckily, our community answered the call thereby ensuring that next year “the show will go on.”
Another community event, which I was unfamiliar with, was the Rotary Sunland Tujunga Shadow Hills Fourth of July Parade. This event draws thousands to Foothill Boulevard to cheer businesses, civic clubs, scouts and others as they make their way down the road. Most entrants – as well as parade viewers – were decked out in Independence Day finery. This was the first year that CV Weekly, along with the Montrose Search and Rescue team, participated in the parade and I didn’t know what to expect.
In a word, it was great! I was in the car behind search and rescue and saw spectators come out to shake the hands of the team members; how incredible is that? Our office manager Rachelle Miller and I were in our car, emblazoned with CV Weekly banners, and were greeted warmly and enthusiastically.
Thank you to the Rotary Sunland Tujunga Shadow Hills for having such a wonderful event and allowing CV Weekly to be a part of it. I look forward to next year.
