Happy Return to School!

I was honored to acknowledge Hayden Dinger, who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, at our July general town council meeting. Congratulations again, Hayden!

Thanks to our supervisor, Kathryn Barger, for providing us with the beach bus to relax from the excessive heat.

Supervisor Barger introduced a motion at the board of supervisors’ meeting to strengthen and expand our School Threat Assessment Response Teams (START). As she shared with our community, “In partnership with our law enforcement and schools, the START program works to prevent shootings and violence by responding to warning signs and cries for help. Since our initial motion passed in February, our START team has already received 133 calls about possible threats. Currently, the program is comprised of only 10 staff members, so it is time we give START the resources the children in Los Angeles County deserve.

Because of our diligent parents, teachers, and students, we can connect our youth to the mental health help they need so they do not become a danger to themselves or those around them. This vital program is going to make all the difference in our effort to keep our schools safe.”

The rummage sale on July 28 at the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station was a job well done by CV Sheriff’s Station volunteers to help raise funds to support our community.

With Glendale mayor Zareh Sinanyan, councilmembers Ara Najarian and Paula Devine, and Assemblywoman Laura Friedman and State Senator Anthony Portantino, I attended the fifth anniversary of the Comfort Women monument at the Glendale Korean American Forum of California (for more on KAFC and the issue of Comfort Women, see www.comfortwomenjustice.org).

At the Aug. 16 meeting of the CV Town Council, Caltrans will give a full overview of what is left of the I-210 project and the deadline for completion. Representatives will also listen to the community’s concerns. In the meantime, Caltrans will close lanes, on/off ramps and connectors on the 210 as part of a pavement rehabilitation project.

“Additionally, the batch plant has been permanently removed from the work site. The concrete crushing operation on the I-710/I-210 transition will be completed by early next week. Motorists should take extra precaution when driving near the site since trucks will begin hauling material. The contractor is expected to complete striping eastbound I-210 between Dunsmore Ave and SR-2 to its final alignment this weekend. Striping for the final alignment of Westbound I-210 between SR-2 and Dunsmore Avenue is now scheduled for the week of Aug. 13.”

We’ll be breaking ground very soon for our Foothill medians!

Please support bingo night on Aug. 17 benefitting the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion post.

But the day before bingo, we look forward to you joining us on Thursday at our regularly scheduled meeting on the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in the community room of the La Crescenta Library, 2809 Foothill Blvd. in La Crescenta.

In the meantime, avoid the heat and stay cool! Happy return to school!

Crescenta Valley Town Council
