P.E.O. Glendale Reciprocity recently held its Founders’ Day luncheon at the Elks Club in Glendale in celebration of the 156th birthday of the organization. The theme of the event was P.E.O. – A Sisterhood of Stars. Glendale Reciprocity is composed of members from 11 Glendale chapters each of which is identified by alphabetical letters. Members of Burbank chapters also joined in the festivities to honor the seven women who founded the organization in 1869.

P.E.O. is a philanthropic organization that has evolved into a sisterhood working toward a common cause where women celebrate the advancement of women, educate women through scholarships, grants, awards and loans and motivate women to achieve their highest aspirations. Scholarships are available for young women attending accredited colleges and women returning to higher education after being a non-student for several years. Applicants applying for scholarships do not need to be a member of P.E.O. or related to a member of P.E.O. The sisterhood also owns and supports Cottey College, a liberal arts college for women in Missouri.

Pat Steen, MZ, chair of the event, welcomed the ladies to Founders’ Day and introduced Chris Welker, U, president of Burbank Reciprocity.  Dori Torrey, FF-KU, gave the invocation. Kristie Colegate, IH, president of Glendale Reciprocity, paid tribute to the seven founders with a reading of “Shine Your Light” written by California State President Renee Cortise. P.E.O. brings together all kinds of women who shine by sharing their talents, skills and passions to work toward a common cause – that of the empowerment of women and higher learning.

The Verdugo Hills Women’s Chorus under the direction of Ki Park presented show tunes as the entertainment of the day.

Following a buffet luncheon, the presidents of each chapter were introduced as well as the past presidents of Glendale Reciprocity.  Glendale and La Crescenta women who have been members of P.E.O. for over 50 years were honored. These included Jane Adrian, Marge McNaught, Emily Whytock of Chapter FF-KU, Elizabeth Nardoni, GD, Dolly Anderson and Anne Peplow, KD-KO. The benediction was given by Pat Steen, MZ.
