Sam Hale, the grandson of George Ellery Hale, founder of Mount Wilson Observatory, will be the featured speaker for the upcoming the Les Tupper Community Service Awards ceremony.
For those not familiar with the Les Tupper Community Service Award, it is an opportunity for the public to recognize volunteers for the tireless work they do in the community and elsewhere. This free event is open to the public and is sponsored by the La Cañada Flintridge Coordinating Council.
Hale’s grandfather, George Ellery Hale, conceived and founded the Mount Wilson Observatory in 1904. Located on Mount Wilson, a 5,710 foot peak in the San Gabriel Mountains near Pasadena and 40 minutes up Angeles Crest Highway, the observatory is the home of two of the largest telescopes of their time, the Hooker and the Snow Solar, as well as being the site of significant scientific and Los Angeles history.
To hear more about G. E. Hale’s link to the the Mount Wilson Observatory, the California Institute of Technology, the Huntington Library and to honor this year’s Les Tupper Community Service Award winners, all are invited to attend the awards ceremony on April 7 at 7 p.m. at Flintridge Prep’s Norris Auditorium.
