The annual Relay for Life of the Foothills, a fundraiser benefitting the American Cancer Society, was held from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday at Clark Magnet High School. About a dozen teams turned out to walk Clark’s field to raise awareness (and funds) for the ACS.
The day was capped with the appearance of Regan Boone who shared with the crowd the battle her family fought with cancer. Boone, with her husband Chuck, had been involved with Relay for Life since 2003 after they learned that her son had a rare form of cancer resulting in the amputation of his leg.
“It is through the love and support of the American Cancer Society and our community [that we got through that difficult time],” she said. “This Relay is very important to me.”
Boone buried her husband Chuck in July after he lost his battle with cancer.
Following her speech participants lit individual candles, then walked the perimeter of the track, which had over 75 bags decorated by local Girl Scouts around it, for the luminaria ceremony.
Commenting on the fewer participants at this year’s Relay, Boone said, “We might be small in numbers this year, but we are mighty in spirit.”
