“Each of you mothers and daughters know that moms are the heroes of our lives and it is the stories they tell us that help shape who we are,” said La Crescenta library manager Marta Wiggins, speaking to a room of mothers and their elementary school-aged daughters.
Since the opening of the library in 2009, Wiggins has been hosting an annual luncheon at the library to honor the bonds between mothers and daughters. The two-hour event was held “on May 13, the day before Mother’s Day, with 80 mothers and daughters in attendance. Attendance to the event was by reservation only.
The theme of the luncheon was butterflies. The walls of the library’s second floor meeting room were lined with paper flower installations arranged by staff members. Attendees drank tea out of dainty ceramic cups while snacking on fruit, croissant sandwiches and miniature desserts. Mothers and daughters posed in front of a garden-themed photo area wearing large, formal hats provided by the library.
As attendees ate, Wiggins shared her inspiration behind the mother-daughter luncheon. She said growing up she was the only girl in a household of boys but her mother encouraged her to embrace her femininity. She also spoke of her mother’s numerous sacrifices in order for Wiggins to be college educated.
“Growing up, my mom told me I could be whoever I wanted to be and do whatever I wanted to do. I hope you share those bonds with your daughters,” said Wiggins. “No one’s home is perfect but what matters is what we do with what we have.”
The luncheon was followed by crafts and a raffle. The raffle items included a Nest candle, a basket of Godiva chocolate, a coloring book and a scarf.
