The Desi Geestman Foundation held its ribbon cutting event at its new location on May 22. The ribbon cutting was from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and was attended by over 60 people. Some of the guest speakers included CV honorary mayor Steve Pierce, CV Chamber of Commerce president Jean Maluccio and program director Illeana Geestman.
In addition to celebrating its move, the goal of the event was to raise awareness of this volunteer-based foundation and the cause behind it.
The foundation, which started in 1999, was the vision of 12-year-old Desi Geestman, who lost her battle to cancer but wanted other children struggling with this illness to have hope.
Program Director Ileana Geestman said, “La Crescenta has done a lot with helping bring cancer awareness the attention it deserves. [The community is] very supportive of the foundation.”
The foundation also hosted a blood drive during the day. In addition to participating in the blood drive, supporters could help by making cash donations. They can also donate gas and grocery cards. Foundation representatives feel that every little bit counts and even small donations as little as five dollars can make a difference.
In addition to financial donations, The Desi Geestman Foundation also needs volunteers for events such as the Pediatric Picnic being held at Griffith Park this Saturday, June 5.
