The Bargain Box Reopens to Eager Shoppers

Montrose resident Linda Sweeney purchased gently used goodies at the reopening of The Bargain Box after a 14-month closure. Hundreds of shoppers were served by volunteer members of the Assistance League – La Cañada Flintridge.

The Assistance League of Flintridge – ALF – reopened its store, The Bargain Box Thrift Shop, on June 1 to a crowd of shoppers eager to see what new items the shop offered.

A line of shoppers wove its way to the freeway overpass waiting to get into the recently reopened Bargain Box.

The community has been looking forward to the reopening of the Bargain Box Thrift Shop, located at 4607 Oakwood Ave. in La Cañada Flintridge, since it closed in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On June 1, shoppers were in line early and by 10 a.m. when the doors opened the line stretched to the overpass of the 210 Freeway. Due to COVID-19 protocols, the store allowed up to 50% capacity but customers were patient; those waiting outside were offered bottles of water.

Sales from the Bargain Box Thrift Shop provide funds for ALF’s philanthropic programs.

“Since 1954, Assistance League of Flintridge has actively served this community,” said Kim Westhoff, newly installed ALF president. “It is exciting for ALF to be able to continue to serve our community with the re-opening of the Bargain Box! We look forward to seeing old friends and new in the Box.”
