On Sept. 19, Kiwanis Club of La Cañada President Mary Gant conducted her last meeting as president and, as is tradition, sang her swan song while thanking those who participated in the many activities she led over the past year. Each was presented with a certificate.

In her final presentation, Gant listed the many accomplishments in the 2011-12 Kiwanis year including the charities the club donated to and the community activities the nearly 100 club members participated in.

Kiwanis is a worldwide organization with clubs in almost every country. The La Cañada club is involved in sponsored youth programs with several Key Clubs in local schools, Terrific Kids, a Travel Adventure Series, its annual Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event (its principal fundraiser taking place on Oct. 7), a literacy project that distributes books to schools in disadvantaged areas, international understanding focused on children around the world, and many community service projects. It also conducts special recognition luncheons which include La Cañadan of the Year, Rose Queen and Court, Clergy Recognition Day, Gold and Eagle Scouts Achievement Awards, and Apple for the Teacher to honor new teachers. The club also provides financial support to many local organizations.
