During the October AAUW Glendale Branch meeting, Tech Trek campers told members about their camp experiences and expressed gratitude for their scholarships.
“I believe that the analytical and problem-solving techniques learned in physics and math have enabled me to find solutions for technical, business and management problems,” said camp coordinator Laura Guillory. “Tech Trek has given these girls a glimpse of those valuable skills.”
The one-week summer camp is supported by AAUW’s research and has been designed to make STEM fields exciting and accessible to girls in middle school. For many girls, the weeklong camp sparked their curiosity and placed them on a new path toward success, Guillory added.
At camp Tech Trek girls experienced hands-on problem solving. They also met with women role models in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
AAUW of California member Marie Wolbach founded Tech Trek in 1998 with the help of an AAUW Community Action Grant. Today AAUW Tech Trek operates at 22 different sites around the nation.
