The La Cañada Flintridge Orthopaedic Guild (LCFOG) held its Annual Book and Author Luncheon in October that celebrated 60 years of service to Orthopaedic Institute for Children, formerly Orthopaedic Hospital. The guests, which numbered 215, were treated to a speech by Dr. Jennifer Beck, one of the few double fellowship pediatric orthopaedic surgeons in California. Dr. Beck captivated the audience when she spoke about the struggle of women in medicine and how they are very slowly making progress and taking their place among male pediatric orthopaedic surgeons.

LCFOG is a non-profit organization that raises money to help fund the Orthopaedic Institute for Children where they can be treated without consideration to financial means.

Caryl Pettit, chair, and Arlene Massimino, co-chair, were the luncheon’s organizers, but all members of the Guild worked to ensure the luncheon’s success. The morning began with Danette Erickson and Ginney Pruitt setting nametags on the guests’ reservation check-in table. Marilyn Center took control of the Bonus Board that offered surprise gifts in sealed envelopes. Carolyn Geer and Judith McClure were busy placing favors at each guest’s table setting. Easy Delaney, assisted by Carolyn Geer, took charge of the 50/50 opportunity drawing and greeted guests their balloon-adorned baskets.  Jeanne Long, Maria Gero and Barbara Self were occupied setting up the book purchasing area and distributing books to the many avid readers.

Authors Joyce Gittlin and Janet Fattal (“Narrow Bridge”) and James Stratton (“Picture Business and 100 Guilty Pleasure Movies”) arrived right on time to begin autographing their books for the Guild’s guests.

Marie Baker, assisted by Marie Gilhooly, was in charge of the silent auction. Numerous tables held gift baskets and items easy to bid on. Mary Beth Perrine handled the live auction for highly coveted tickets to three local events.

The Guild will next meet on Dec. 7. Anyone interested in being part of this all- volunteer group can contact Marie Gilhooly (818) 249-5262.
