Twelve Oaks Hosts Public Open House

After a four-year closure, Twelve Oaks Senior Living, formerly known as Twelve Oaks Lodge, 2820 Sycamore Ave. in La Crescenta, is nearing completion of its renovation and will host a complimentary open house on Sunday, Dec. 3 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Twelve Oaks Lodge dates back to 1935 when James and Effie Fifield donated their 13-room home to the Verdugo Hills Sunshine Society to provide a home for elderly women. National Charity League of Glendale has been involved with Twelve Oaks Lodge since the 1950s, initially providing funding and volunteer time, eventually becoming the primary steward of the Foundation and the home. After 10 years under management by another company, the home was closed in October 2013. NCL Glendale regained control of the Foundation in August 2015, and the Foundation has now been reconstituted with independent board members.

The Twelve Oaks property is owned by Twelve Oaks Foundation. The Foundation has contracted with Northstar Management to operate the facility, which  will be known as Twelve Oaks Senior Living.

Rose Chan Loui, Twelve Oaks Foundation board member, said, “We are looking forward to the reopening of Twelve Oaks and can’t wait to show the renovated property to the community. Not only do we have former residents, but also former employees, returning, which is a testament to how special Twelve Oaks is to the community.

“In the past, NCL Glendale’s members of mothers and daughters made substantial monetary donations, led beautification projects and holiday festivities, hosted Puppy Parties and Game Mornings, served residents at the weekly summer barbecues and paid one-on-one visits with residents. Twelve Oaks Senior Living residents will once again hear the laughter and experience the love, companionship and liveliness of NCL mothers and daughters.”

“Northstar Senior Living is dedicated to exemplary service in our communities and the highest quality of life for our residents,” said Steve Kregel, C.O.O. of Northstar Senior Living. “Twelve Oaks Senior Living staff are like family where residents are kept safe and comfortable in a welcoming community.”

Initially, the Oaks building will have a total 28 rooms and from 30 to 35 beds available. The upper level of the building will serve assisted living residents, while the ground floor will be devoted to memory care, with its own dining room and patio.

More than $1.5 million has been spent improving the property, including the addition of the 18-bed memory care floor.

Community amenities include a hair salon, library and an art gallery of original paintings by residents and family members dating back to the 1920s. Landscaped grounds with walking paths, a large outdoor patio shaded by oak trees, gardening beds, the original rose garden, and oak and fruit trees all provide a peaceful and tranquil environment for residents to socialize and to walk their pets.

Activities Director Esther Hanna will coordinate a full calendar of activities for residents, including outdoor movies, outings to local venues, art, computer and other classes, wellness seminars, volunteer opportunities, bingo, men’s club, women’s club, tea time and more.

Starting at $2,800 per month for a studio unit, residents will enjoy three restaurant-style meals per day, optional additional services, daily activities, a full-time nurse, a call system, 24-hour staffing, weekly housekeeping, laundry, and cable TV.
