On Nov. 6, the YMCA of the Foothills held its annual volunteer recognition night in the Boddy House at the Descanso Gardens. Over 70 community members attended the event including volunteers, board members, community leaders and Y staff members.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation to Chris Waldheim of the 2010 Pat Aho Volunteer of the Year award. This award was established in 1989 and dedicated to Pat Aho, a former staff member and volunteer. The award recognizes individuals who have a passion for helping others while donating their time and talents to the Y.
“It is truly an honor to help make an impact with the Y and there are so many others who have contributed as well,” said Waldheim who was visibly moved as he acknowledged the dedication of late Y volunteer and previous award winner Norma Klingingsmith, who recently passed away.
Waldheim began his Y career in 1998 on the board of Managers at the Verdugo Hills Family YMCA. He joined the corporate board in 2005 and served through 2010. He was the Volunteer Chairman of the Community Support Campaign in 2008, 2009 and 2010. While on the board, he held Executive Committee positions of secretary and vice-chairman. He and his family are avid supports of the Verdugo Hills Family YMCA Winter Carnival held each December.
Waldheim’s community involvement does not stop with the Y as he is instrumental in the La Crescenta Relay for Life, the Crescenta Valley and Montrose chambers of commerce and the Montrose Christmas Parade. His spirit and dedication to the Y has made a lasting impact.
“The Y is fortunate to be supported by so many capable and caring volunteers,” said Mary Jane Snyder, director of Volunteers at the Y. “It’s important to recognize their time and dedication – this event is a great way to celebrate the wonderful spirit of volunteerism so well exemplified by these remarkable individuals.”
