Dignity Health Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center announced that Ben Yu, doctor of pharmacy, received the 2015 Tom Miller Award (Individual category) from the Glendale Healthier Community Coalition. This prestigious award recognizes an individual, group and youth who are grounded in the qualities the Coalition wishes to demonstrate including collaboration, advancement of community health in all its forms, high ethical standards, advocacy and dedication to the betterment of Glendale and altruism.
Dr. Yu serves as senior pharmacist at Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center, and nearly every Tuesday evening for the past several years he volunteers for the Glendale Community Free Health Clinic (GCFHC) dispensing medication and providing greatly needed education to GCFHC’s patients. Offering his time and professional expertise to serve as the GCFHC pharmacist, demonstrates his deep commitment to improving the health of the poor and underserved in our community.
According to director of Mission Integration and Spiritual Care Services Rev. Cassie McCarty, MDiv, BCC, “Ben is genuine, compassionate, caring and quite humble. Behind the scenes he quietly provides his services focusing on others rather than himself. He is currently inspiring others to volunteer, and his ongoing dedication serves to inspire all of us here in the hospital and in the community.”
Awardees not only reflect the core values of the Glendale Healthier Community Coalition but also embody the spirit of Tom Miller for whom the awards honor and are named. His creativity, passion, inclusiveness, egalitarianism, and altruism are reflected in the awardees for all categories: individual, group and youth.
The Soroptimists International of Glendale won the award for group and youth awardees were tied between Mary Kalfayan and Wade King.
