La Canada’s historic Lanterman House hosted well over 200 visitors on the balmy afternoon of Sunday, Dec. 17. From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., guests were treated to caroling under an artificial snowfall, a holiday boutique, gingerbread house contest, crafts and treats. The free event took place on the grounds and holiday-decorated interior of the House.
Impressive among the gingerbread houses created by community members was a gingerbread village put together by the Verdugo Girl Scouts’ Troup 7551. Holiday-themed ornaments were crafted by visitors at craft tables. La Cañada High School’s Chamber singers sang carols in front of a winter backdrop as artificial snow fell. The holiday boutique featured one-of-a kind hand-crafted art. Local artist-vendors were decked out in Santa hats and other holiday regalia. All that was missing was Rudolf the red-nosed reindeer. Free refreshments included hot cider, gingerbread and frosted cookies.
The Lanterman House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was originally owned by Dr. Roy Lanterman and his wife Emily. It is now owned by the City of La Cañada Flintridge. The home, covering about 11,500 square feet, was the first totally reinforced concrete home built west of the Mississippi. It was designed in 1915by architect Arthur Haley.
