Grabbing the Chance to Lend a Hand

Many of our Crescenta Valley residents and chamber board members were busy this last weekend improving the world and specifically the Crescenta Valley.

The CV Chamber had its e-waste recycle event last Saturday and the community came through and cleaned out their garages. Over eight pallets, six feet high of monitors, computers, printers and miscellaneous e-waste were donated to the cause.

What a great way to start to improve the world – eight pallets of e-waste at a time. The event was co-sponsored by PHAT Energy, who was on hand to educate residents in another way to help the world: by going solar at their businesses or residences. Please continue to save your e-waste as we will be having another e-waste event this summer. And remember, throwing it in the trash is toxic to our land, so save it for six months and e-waste recycle it with the CV Chamber.

Just down the road from the e-waste event at the La Crescenta Avenue freeway off-ramp, members of the CV Chamber and the CV Town Council, led by Steve Pierce, were hard at work picking up trash by the side of the road – and it wasn’t even court ordered! In July of 2007 the Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce applied for an encroachment permit through Adopt a Highway for the La Crescenta off-ramp. This five-year permit is a joint venture with the Crescenta Valley Town Council and will expire Aug. 31, 2012. Prior to this, the La Crescenta off-ramp was ugly blacktop, cracked and full of weeds, and not being cared for.  This was a very bad first impression driving into this beautiful city. Caltrans supplied most of the equipment required and needed. They put in the water system and green plants were requested that discourage weeds. Steve Pierce took a short training class to make sure everything was understood of what can and cannot be done. The clean up of the off-ramp takes place approximately once a month, depending on the weather. It is always on a Saturday morning around 8:30 a.m., and takes about 45 minutes.

Members of the Council and Chamber along with any community member over 18 are encouraged to help. Please call the Chamber if you would like to help for the next off-ramp clean up.

If you drove up to the top of the Crescenta Valley this past Saturday morning you would see members of the community and the CV Chamber, including Eleanor Wacker, at Deukmejian Wilderness Park planting Big Cone Spruce trees to help reforest the burn areas. It was a great turn out from the community – great fun digging holes in the dirt (rock) and many trees were planted. What another great event improving our world and the Crescenta Valley!
