Day at the Races 2017

If it’s March, it must be time for Day at the Races. We love this event because it’s a chance for the CV Chamber to work together with the Montrose-Verdugo City Chamber of Commerce and the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Support Group.  We’ve once again secured the Top of the Stretch section at Santa Anita Racetrack for an afternoon party suitable for the whole family. The fun happens on Sunday, March 19.

If you’ve never been to the Top of the Stretch, it’s the area at ground level where the thoroughbreds make their final turn into the home stretch. At this point, the horses really pick up speed and the excitement in the crowd swells. You can practically feel the breath and see the perspiration on these gorgeous creatures as they race by, trying to beat their opponents.

When you’re ready to sit down again, your $25 ticket affords you a comfortable seat at tables perfect for enjoying the freshly barbecued lunch, salads, soft drinks and homemade desserts. Bring the kids (17 & under) for only $15 each. They can’t bet on the races but they can sure have fun watching them and often give solid betting advice. For expert handicapping advice, co-organizer Rick Dinger will be on hand to steer you (hopefully!) in the right direction.

The gates open at 11 a.m. with the first of nine races starting at 12:30 p.m. We’ll have raffle and silent auction prizes, too. There’ll be all kinds of opportunities to test your St. Patrick’s Day Luck o’ the Irish. Proceeds benefit both chambers and the Sheriff’s Support Group. In case you don’t know, the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Support Group helps maintain the important connection between our community and the Sheriff’s Department. They support programs such as STAR, Montrose Search and Rescue Team, Explorer Scouts, Civilian Volunteers, Reserves, Mounted Posse, C.E.R.T., Neighborhood Watch, and Arson Watch.  The CVSSG raises funds to pay for specialized equipment and other programs necessary to operations at the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station. Thanks to the Support Group and the sheriffs for all they do for the community.

Your ticket comes with a free parking pass so you’ll need to have that in your hand upon arriving at Santa Anita Park. Either stop by the CV Chamber office between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. weekdays to purchase and pick up your tickets or give us a call. We’ll take your credit card over the phone and mail your tickets to your home.  Please call or mail in your check by March 13 so we can mail your tickets in time.  You can pick up tickets until March 17, the Friday before.

Upcoming Events

The Smart-a-thon is Wednesday, March 15 at USC Verdugo Hills Hospital. We’re currently at 30 teams but there’s still room for more! Go to www.crescentavalleychamber.org/smart for more info.
