Youth Sports Spotlight

Sports are a valuable growing opportunity available to our youth through their schools, organized athletics in the community and even outside of our city. The Montrose-Verdugo City Chamber of Commerce would like to spotlight a special athlete in our community who epitomizes a true athlete. Not only dedicated to her sport through committed training, but she is a team player and an all-around outstanding person and student.

Delaney Bromberek, aka Pixie Crush

Delaney Bromberek (aka Pixie Crush) is a freshman at Crescenta Valley High School and a roller derby darling. She has been skating in the sport of roller derby since she was 6½ years old. She began skating with the LA Derby Dolls and transferred to Angel City Derby three years ago where she skates on their A-lister travel team. Delaney has learned much of her personal strength and some of her values through her team and coaches. She loves being a part of this sport and said: “Growing up in this sport has given me a lot of respect for teamwork, an amazing extended family, and a lot of strength and confidence. I hope that one day I will be able to get on my dream team, the Hollywood Scarlets, when I turn 18.”

She loves that she has chosen a sport that advocates for inclusion and builds girls and women up encouraging them to not let anything get in their way. Over her years she has had experience coaching and being a referee as well and just may become a coach one day bringing her derby career full circle by giving back to the sport that has given her so much.

The Angel City Derby is a group of athletes of all ages who come together purely out of love for the sport and the desire to encourage female-driven athletics. The Angel City Derby website states that “skaters chose names to embrace the kitsch of the old-style of roller derby by paying homage to the legacy of skaters who often adopted pseudonyms or nicknames.” Sticking to that homage to the legacy led to Delaney’s choice of Pixie Crush. The website goes on further: “Despite the witty names, we are serious about our athletic endeavors in the modern incarnation of the sport.”

Angel City Junior Derby will be participating in the SoCal Shakedown: Juniors Tournament April 6-8 at the Anarchy Hall, 8990 Claybeck Ave., Sun Valley, CA. We wish the team luck during the tournament, and will be cheering on our very own Crescenta Valley’s Pixie Crush.
