Cupcakes and Stars at Rocky Cola

Mary Dawson

Did you know that Rocky Cola, our beloved ’50s themed diner, is celebrating its 23rd year in the Montrose Shopping Park? I spoke with owner and general manager Lucy Di Mino to get the latest updates on food, fun and patrons. Let’s start with the food that “keeps ‘em comin’ back.”

The latest specialty at R.C. is cupcakes. They are near and dear to Lucy’s heart as she and her sister Antoinette bake them. They have over 50 different flavors now including bestseller “supercalifragi
listicexpialidocious.” Whew! I hope I spelled that right! This is an orange banana cake with coconut pecan frosting, topped with butterscotch and chocolate chips. Rocky Cola’s cupcakes are some of the freshest and best tasting I have ever had.

Burgers are the #1 seller here and they have at least five different ones from bacon cheeseburgers to healthy garden burgers. And then there’s all the good fried sides including zucchini and onion rings.

Lots of folks also come to R.C. for breakfast. It’s so comforting. In addition to all the standard breakfast foods there are a lot of “fitness” options as well such as egg white French toast.

And then there’s the famous soda fountain with sundaes piled high with whipped cream, shakes, malts, and root beer floats made the old fashioned way with real ice cream. It’s no wonder celebrities like to eat here. Miley Cyrus and her family including dad Billy Ray have frequented R.C. on many occasions. Shia Labeouf, star of The Transformers, has dined here as well as Kevin Costner and Whiney Houston. You just never know whom you are going to run into in Montrose. One of the most famous visitors was then President Bill Clinton who “dropped in” while in town, while all of his Secret Service Agents waited and guarded, to have a buffalo burger and iced tea.

So do stop in and try Rocky Cola yourself. While there see if you can spot Lucy. But be careful, she is one of a triplet of sisters who all work there. You might be speaking to Antoinette or Mary Ellen.

Rocky Cola is the fun red and white building at the corner of Honolulu and Verdugo. See you in Montrose and don’t forget to visit the Montrose Shopping Park on Facebook.
