LOOK! It’s Those Fabulous Berger Boys!

Mary Dawson

Can you believe that Montrose Bowl ( 2334 Honolulu 249-3895) has been around since 1936! It was originally built as a movie theater but there were not enough fire exits, thus the bowling alley was born. Bob Berger’s parents purchased the business in 1982. They are retired now and Bob the son is running things. Walking into the bowling alley is like stepping back in time. People love it. This is evidenced by how many parties are booked here. Companies, law firms, locals, and even movie stars have their parties at Montrose Bowl. Bob said there is one family from Hawaii who has flown in every year for 20 years. Now back to the movie stars. More of them have been here than I can write about, Jennifer Anniston, Vince Vaughn, George Lopez, and Van Halen, just to drop a few names. Can you believe Robert DeNiro and Michelle Pfieffer filmed Frankie and Johnny here?
When you book a party you get the whole bowling alley, all 8 lanes, shoes, balls, and bumper lanes. Up to 95 people can come. There’s a sound system to play your own CDs. You can bring in your own food or have the burgers, fries, and hot dogs on the MB menu. Beverages must be purchased at Montrose Bowl. They have over 70 different beers, plus wine and soft drinks. Rates vary depending on the date. On a typical Saturday afternoon it’s $350 for 2 hours and $150 for each additional hour.

Don’t want to go the party route? MB is open to the public on Monday nights 5:30 -9 and on weekday afternoons if there is no party. Cost is $25 an hour per lane for up to 5 people. From 9-11 on you can try “Rock & Bowl”. The whole bowling alley turns into a bowling disco with black lights and glow in the dark effects. And of course the music is blasting. Bet they didn’t do this in the 30’s. Doesn’t all this sound like fun? It makes me want to get out there with some friends and give it a try. Bob has everything you need to know on a rate sheet or you can check out their website www.montrosepartybowl.com. Hope you enjoyed meeting the Berger boys. We are thankful for what they do, another one of a kind place that makes Montrose special.  I sure am enjoying getting to know the people and their businesses better and I’m glad you are too.
