It Started in Montrose

Vito at the Montrose Barber Shop

Did you know that next week is National Flag Week? In June 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed the proclamation declaring the week in which June 14 occurs as National Flag Week. During this time, all citizens are encouraged to proudly display the American flag. As you shop, dine and stroll along Honolulu Avenue, you will see many such flags on display along with our light pole banners proclaiming Montrose as the “Home of National Flag Week.”

One of the men responsible for persuading the U.S. Congress to proclaim National Flag Week as an annual observance of respect for our national symbol was Montrose’s own Vito Cannella, pictured at center photo here with the crew of the Montrose Barber Shop. Born in 1928, the son of Sicilian parents, Vito came to America in 1950. In 1958, he opened Vito’s Barber Shop in the heart of Montrose. He also served as the postmaster of Montrose in the 1960s when the Montrose Shopping Park was born.  It was Vito, along with local merchant Bill Bailey, who started it all right here in Montrose!

This week our Sunday Market features sun-ripened berries, homemade jams and freshly baked bread. While shopping in our Market, take a moment to listen to the soothing sounds of jazz from the Mark Towns trio. And you’ll find many unique shops and restaurant to enjoy while spending time at our Market. It’s all happening in Montrose this Sunday!
