Chamber Hosting Special Mixer

On Aug. 12, 1929, a lot was purchased at 2537 Foothill Blvd. in La Crescenta at a cost of $2,505. A stone bungalow fire station was erected for a cost of $7,614, and by April 23, 1930, it was occupied. The fire crew consisted of four regulars and two volunteers.

This same stone bungalow, known as The Fire House, will host the Crescenta Valley Chamber August mixer. Our mixers are normally held on a Wednesday, but we will be switching to a Tuesday night for this one, as we thought you would like to see it in action.

The Fire House is open on Tuesday nights for high school age students. The supervised youth center offers programs, tutoring and fun. We would like the community to take a look while enjoying an island buffet hosted by the CV Chamber of Commerce. The mixer will be held on Tuesday, Aug.14 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The address now reads 2563 Foothill Blvd., but over 80 years, land seems to shift a little.

There is a lot of history in this community and the chamber of commerce has been a big part of it for nearly 90 years. From the 1928 booklet called “La Crescenta, Star of the Foothills” to the current business directory where La Crescenta is described as “The Balcony of Southern California,” the chamber has continued to invite people to move to “this glorious Land of Sunshine,” with its incredible views and climate. The five-pointed star on the La Crescenta Star of the Foothills booklet boasted that its five points guide the Way to Health, Wealth, Happiness, Beauty and Sunshine.

Don’t forget our golf tournament at Verdugo Hills Golf Course on Saturday, Aug. 4. If you’re a good golfer, or just plain lucky, you have a chance at winning $5,000 on the hole in one sponsored by Caspian Services. The $40 fee includes coffee, pastries, lunch and possibly a trophy.  To entertain you while awaiting the winning scores, we will play a little fantasy golf for prizes. This one is pure luck.

Proceeds benefit our scholarship program.
