Alex 90 – Celebrating 90 Years Of The Historic Alex Theatre
The historic Alex Theatre in Glendale will be celebrating its 90th birthday on Sept. 4 starting at 7 p.m. and we are all invited! The invitation reads, “Stroll down the red carpet, dance under the stars to live entertainment, savor classic drinks and enjoy a culinary journey led by Glendale’s finest caterer Anoush Catering.” This sounds like a party you don’t want to miss! The evening will also include raffles, prizes and a silent auction. To add to the ambiance of this gala affair, they “strongly encourage” you to dress in vintage attire from your favorite era. It will feel just like the theatre’s opening night on Sept. 4, 1925.
One of the highlights of the evening will be the relighting of the iconic neon spire on the marquee. It is sure to “dazzle” you. Glendale Arts has taken great care to make sure that the spire and the marquee reflect the history of the Alex Theatre as well as include the latest technological advances of the 21st century.
Relighting this spire has been no small feat. The tower and spire need a complete overhaul and restoration to return the Alex to its previous glory. The $75,000 campaign includes support from businesses, organizations, art lovers, historical preservation advocates and community members at large. You can be one them! The organizing committee knows that generations of Angelenos have fond memories of Glendale’s Alex Theatre. The theatre, neon lights and marquee are used by many as a meeting point, a landing guide, a spark for a memory and an ultimate destination. Its stunning presence is a testament to the decades of entertainment that the performing arts center has made available to the city. The Alex Theatre is treasured for its history, recognized for its economic impact, and cherished as the cornerstone of arts and entertainment in Glendale. This once threatened “jewel” in Glendale is ready for its “close up” and we all need to be a part of it! You can become a supporter of the Alex90 project, a year-long campaign intended to celebrate the longevity of the historic venue as well as safeguard the Alex Theatre as a mainstay for the people of Glendale and the surrounding communities. The 2015-16 season will include events and programming honoring the theatre’s legacy in preserving the past and presenting the future. Proceeds from the Alex90 celebration and sponsorships will go to support the Alex90 fundraising campaign supporting restoration, programming and capital improvement projects at the Alex Theatre.
