Harvest Market Abundance

I had so much fun at our Harvest Market recently! I arrived with a large Mary Lake Thompson market bag, my “go everywhere” camera, and a small wad of cash. I left with a bulging bag, some great pics to share, and went through my cash like sand through an hourglass. In fact I found so much stuff I had to tap my husband for more.

My approach this time was to scout out the whole thing first. I got as far as one of our newest vendors, “Soap Me.” Owner Stacy Baron prides herself on using only the finest natural ingredients. I bought a Café Mocha Bar with coffee scrubbies – it’s divine and smells like chocolate – and an “Easy Going” Shampoo bar with essential oils. Stop by their booth and take advantage of this week’s special, 5 bars for $25.

I tried to interview Lenny G’s but they were so busy I wasn’t able to. When I saw their Shrimp Po’ Boys I knew why. Next time I must try one. By the way, I hear they will be celebrating their second anniversary in Montrose this Sunday.

Meanwhile Julio at Curiel’s Mediterranean has a double char-grilled chicken kabob served over Greek salad for $8 that is substantial, healthy and delicious.

A well-rounded market focuses on the produce but also touches on entertainment, artisans, and something for the kids. This week we will be showcasing Padres Trail, Greg Lee’s local group that specializes in easy listening music. Throughout the coming weeks expect to see “The Subs,” “Gremoli Jazz Band” and “Sarkis.”

There is always a wealth of farm fresh produce at our market and our plan is to continue to excel in this area. Allow me to suggest Guevara Farms. Louie brings his crop of avocados grown in Chino for us to enjoy. I bought five and have a ripening rotation going on so I can enjoy them throughout the week. They are superb. To partner with those avocados take a few steps to Houwelings Nursery and meet Cindy, also known as “the tomato girl.” I purchased a whole bag of romas for $1 a pound. Try some of the gourmet strawberry tomatoes while you’re at it. You’ll know why they are thus named when you see them.
