The La Cañada Flintridge Library recently hosted a free, one-hour kids’ cooking program. On Wednesday, Nov. 13, some 25 kids ages 5-12 stormed the library’s meeting room to make pear bread. Most, though, were interested in eating it instead of making it.

Supervising the bunch was librarian Sarah Loverme, who has worked at the branch for 10 years.

Budding chefs, from left, Aurora Cheng, 7; her cousin Charlotte Cheng, 6; and Eva Olson, 7, try their hands at mixing bread dough.

“The goal of our cooking class is that the children will be able to help out their families over the holidays,” said Loverme.

Mom Divya Patel brought her aspiring chefs Rayna, 9, and Kaiya, 6.

“Here they will learn concentration and cooperation skills that can translate outside the classroom,” she said. “My kids love to cook.”

CrEATive Plate sponsored the program that teaches the fundamentals of cooking and nutrition. At the library, the students learned how to use measuring tools, cooking equipment, basic cooking techniques and how to read recipes.

Eating their pear bread is the best fun of all for Eva, Charlotte, and Aurora.
