Lunch and meeting will be held at the Elks Lodge in Glendale beginning with the 11:30 a.m. meeting and 11:45 a.m. lunch.

KIWANIS CLUB HOSTS GCC PRESIDENT

On Jan. 17, the Kiwanis Club of Glendale will present Dr. David Viar of Glendale Community College.

Guests are welcome at the weekly lunch meeting. The cost to attend, which includes lunch, is $15. Meetings start at noon.

ace/121 PRESENTS ‘WHAT SHE SAID’

Throughout time and across all cultures women have held the role of prophet, oracle, seer, and diviner. Their stories have warned where society was heading. In exchange for their wisdom they have been banned and burned, but also revered and channeled.

The exhibition “What She Said” includes 2D, 3D and performance art, as well as free public programming. The show places focus on feminist strategies that address current dystopian reality. “What She Said,” starts with the premise that extreme circumstances create fertile ground for visionary speculation. The artwork in the show addresses the way an oracular vision speaks to society today in a digital culture, integrating gazes, voices, and experiences.

The exhibit is from Jan. 17 through March 13 with the opening reception on Jan. 17 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Presented by ace/121 Gallery & The Association of Hysteric Curators.

Gallery hours are Tuesday 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and Wednesday/Thursday from noon to 5 p.m. or by appointment.

SCREENING PLANNED

Gather, Inspire and Act and the Montrose Peace Vigil present “Honeyland” on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church in the fellowship hall (downstairs). “Honeyland” is a documentary about bee keeping in Macedonia, one that the Washington Post referred to as “an ecological fable.” In “Honeyland” the audience will see how time-tested wisdom of harmony with nature clashes with short term goal of profit plus enjoy seeing a beautiful corner of the world and the traditional practice of bee keeping.

Doors open at 7 p.m.; film begins at 7:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served and there will be a discussion after the film.

WINTER CONCERTS PERFORMED AT CALTECH

Caltech Chamber Music, directed by Maia Jasper White, presents its annual winter concerts. Enjoy music by Elgar, Brahms, Bach, Beethoven, Boccherini, Borodin, Barber, Haydn, Shostakovich and many more. LA Phil Principal Concertmaster Martin Chalifour joins students for two works. All concerts will be held on the Caltech campus in Dabney Lounge, except for Jan. 18, which will be in the Hameetman Center second floor in Frautschi Hall. Admission is free and no tickets are required.

Concerts are Friday, Jan. 17, at 8 p.m.; Saturday, Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. in Frautschi Hall, Hameetman Center second floor; Sunday, Jan. 19 at 3 p.m.; Friday, Jan. 24 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 26 at 3 p.m.

LCWC HOSTS BINGO

On Saturday, Jan. 18, the community is invited to a bingo game at the La Crescenta Woman’s Club. Check-in is at 5 p.m. Pizza, sandwiches, chips, cookies, soda, water and more will be available for purchase.

All games pay $100 or more! Admission is $20 per person and includes a packet for 10 games. Each game has six cards. Opportunity baskets, too!

DEMO CLUB MEETING HOSTS CANDIDATES

Candidates for many local races in the March 3 primary will take the stage at the Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club on Sunday, Jan. 19 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living, 4845 Dunsmore Ave., La Crescenta.

Senator Anthony Portantino, facing no opposition for State Senate District 25, will make a statement along with Assemblywoman Laura Friedman (AD 43), Assemblywoman Luz Rivas (AD 39), and Club VP Susan Mastrodemos, who is running for the LA County Democratic Party’s Central Committee.

Two candidates for LA County Supervisor, District 5, will be heard: John Harabedian and Darrell Park.

Also on board will be five Glendale City Council candidates: Paula Devine, Dan Brotman, Vartan Gharapetian, Andy Kassakhian and Leonard Manoukian.

Desiree Rabinov will speak as a candidate for Glendale City College board of trustees, representing Montrose/La Crescenta.

Seven Superior Court judge candidates will wrap up the endorsement appeals: Tom Parsekian for seat #150, Steve Morgan for seat #72, Emily Cole for seat #76, Adan Montalban for seat #145, David Diamond and Scott Yang for seat #162, and Kenneth Fuller for seat #129.

The Club can only vote on and endorse Democrats, which all these candidates are registered as. Votes are counted only from verified Club members and an endorsement is made if two-thirds of the members are in agreement. All are asked to come early as the signing-in and receiving ballots may take extra time.

Member Adam Goodman will also ask for a vote on a resolution from J Street U in opposition to Israel’s expansion of settlements in the West Bank and in support of a two-state solution.

FREE WEEKLY LECTURE ON TOXINS

The Church of Scientology Mission of the Foothills is offering a free lecture every Tuesday night in January at 7 p.m. explaining the purification program, a detoxification program that helps eliminate drugs, toxins and other chemicals that lodge in the body that adversely affect a person’s mind, body and spirit.

The talk will be given by La Cañada resident Larry Monroe who has been helping people and businesses deal with life’s challenges for over 35 years.

SING IN 2020 WITH THE TOWNE SINGERS

The Towne Singers is a non-audition choir that is in need of male voices, but welcome all to join this family of musicians. Rehearsals for the upcoming spring concert begin Monday, Jan. 20. The concert is scheduled for Sunday, May 31.

CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION

Celebrate the Chinese New Year with a program of Chinese paper-cutting, a unique folk art that originated in China around the 6th Century AD. Emmy Lam will lead participants in creating creative cuts that they will want to display at home.

BRAND ASSOCIATES 2020 MUSIC SERIES

The Brand Associates 2020 Music Series will consist of six concerts taking place in the Brand Library Recital Hall through April 4. The concerts are on Saturday afternoons at 2 p.m. The series presents top chamber music groups from Southern California and beyond. The concerts are sponsored by the Brand Associates.  A reception will follow each concert with an opportunity to meet the artists.

On Jan. 25, Argus Quartet, the award winning string quartet, will be performing. Argus Quartet was founded in Los Angeles but now resides in New York.

ATTENTION MUSIC LOVERS!

Dr. Ted Stern, a professor of music, is again conducting a series of music appreciation classes for adults in the community. This is the 19th consecutive year of classes for non-musicians and musicians alike that explores the histories of music and composers. The topic for this new series is “A New Look at Music Appreciation ¬– Even More Surprises From the Internet.”

   The 10-week series of classes begins Tuesday, Jan. 28 and continues every Tuesday through March 31 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church cultural hall, 2700 Montrose Ave. in Montrose.

CALTECH JAZZ BAND PRESENTS CONCERT

The Caltech Jazz Band, under the direction of Barb Catlin, presents the “New Music & Emerging Artist” jazz guest artist concert. This event will take place on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. in Beckman Auditorium. It features the Caltech jazz band. FREE EDUCATIONAL FAIR AT USC-VERDUGO HILLS HOSPITAL

USC-VHH is hosting AIB2B – “Equipped for The Future,” an education fair for HS/MS/skilled trades.

This is of particular interest to parents of middle and high school students. Strikes For Kids is hosting the SFK LA Bowling Classic on Sunday, Feb. 23 from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Lucky Strike LA Live at 800 W. Olympic Blvd. Los Angeles. The family-friendly fundraiser for all ages and skill levels will be hosted by Los Angeles Clippers’ star forward Montrezl Harrell, who will be joined by guest teammates.

Proceeds from this event will benefit the Strikes For Kids bike giveaway program that rewards 20 local student-athletes from the Los Angeles area community ranging from ages 6 to 13 years old for their athletic and academic success. BILINGUAL PROGRAM AT GLENDALE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

A bilingual Armenian/English program entitled “Take Your Life Back After Cancer” is presented at Glendale Memorial Hospital on Wednesdays from 5.30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The program is free of charge to the public.

The Pioneer Club meets the first and third Mondays every month at the fellowship hall – Healy Hall – at Holy Redeemer Church, 2411 Montrose Ave. (parking and hall accessed around the corner on lower Briggs Avenue). The club also offers trips and tours bus trip to Harrah’s Rincon Casino for a day of fun on selected dates plus other outings.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and A1C and tools for a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of complications.
