SEMINAR ON HUMAN TRAFFICKING

A seminar is being held at Sunland Neighborhood Church today, Thursday, Jan. 24 on the trafficking of children. Discussion will be on how predators on social media are seducing teens through live streaming, apps and online video game chat room. The president and CEO of Million Kids, Opal Singleton, will be the speaker for the seminar.

First responders and social workers are invited to the afternoon session (1 p.m. to 4 p.m.) that focuses on understanding and identification by emergency responders and how technology is impacting crime and crime solving.

The evening session from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. is open to the community; parents are encouraged to bring their middle school and high school aged children who are at least 13 years of age.

JAPANESE CONSUL GENERAL PRESENTING AT KIWANIS CLUB GLENDALE

One-hundred-and-fifty years of U.S.-Japanese relations will be the topic of the Jan. 25 meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Glendale. The speaker for the luncheon program is Japanese Consul General Mr. Akira Chiba.

TOWNE SINGERS EXTENDS INVITATION

Love to sing? Join the Towne Singers! The Towne Singers is a non-audition choir. Male voices are needed, but all are welcome to join this family of musicians. Rehearsals for the upcoming spring concert “All The
Best” began Jan. 14. The concert is scheduled for Saturday, May 11.

VALLEY GIRL REDEFINED

Brand Library & Art Center and 11:11 A Creative Collective are hosting Valley Girl Redefined, an expansive group exhibition of women defined as the new architects of the “valley girl.” The exhibit is from Jan. 25 through March 22. The opening reception is on Saturday, Jan. 26 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. It will include a ceremony by the Cihuatl Women’s Group at 6:30 p.m., a pop-up shop by 11:11 ACC and VLY GRL and complimentary beer from 818 Brewing including their signature brew, Valley
Girl Blonde.

There will be eclectic tunes by Valley Girl DJ Lobo and friends and an interactive art installation for women who self-identify as Valley Girls. Artists will be in attendance.

LCWC PREPARES LUNCHEON

La Crescenta Woman’s Club Author’s Luncheon is being held on Saturday, Jan. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the La Crescenta Woman’s Clubhouse. Cost is $40 per person. A portion of proceeds will benefit Club scholarship and philanthropy funds.

2018 ELECTIONS

The Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club will look at “The 2018 Elections: What Happened? Why? And Now What?” at its next monthly meeting on Sunday, Jan. 27 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living, 4845 Dunsmore Ave., La Crescenta.

Andrew Winnick, professor emeritus of economics and statistics at Cal State University, Los Angeles, will be the guest speaker. His talk is a reprise of speakers who presented at The American Institute for Progressive Democracy in November. Those were Jennifer Merolla, Vann Newkirk, James Tucker, Dan Walters and Adrian Pantoja.

Winnick is the President of the board of directors of The American Institute for Progressive Democracy, an action-oriented, public policy think tank.

Dr. Ted Stern, a professor of music, is again conducting a series of music appreciation classes for adults in the community. This is the 18th consecutive year of classes for non-musicians and musicians alike that explore the histories of composers and their music. The topic for this new series is “Musicals in the 20th Century” (years 1960-2000).

The 10-week series of classes begins Jan. 29 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and continues every Tuesday through April 2 at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church cultural hall, 2700 Montrose Ave. in Montrose.

FREE MEN’S HEALTH SEMINAR

VALENTINE PAINT NIGHT AT USC-VHH

The USC-VHH Women’s Council is hosting a fundraiser on Friday, Feb. 1 to raise funds for the recently opened Neo Natal Critical Care Unit. THE ARCHITECTURE OF HEALTH: AN ARCHITECTURAL RESPONSE TO AN EPIDEMIC

On Saturday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m., La Cañada Flintridge Public Library historian Ann Scheid will discuss how the 19th century tuberculosis epidemic influenced Southern California architecture, using examples from architects Charles & Henry Greene, Myron Hunt, Gordon Kaufman and Frederick Roehrig.

At the turn of the 20th century, tuberculosis accounted for approximately one-in-five adult deaths, affecting every part of society. The main treatment available was living and sleeping out of doors. Patients visited sanitariums where they slept on “cure porches” and were encouraged to exercise vigorously. Schools and other institutions were also redesigned to foster the outdoor life.

KARINE ARMEN TO SPEAK TO VERDUGO HILLS SIERRA CLUB

The Verdugo Hills Chapter of the Sierra Club invites the public to attend its monthly meeting and slide presentation by Karine Armen on Monday, Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at La Crescenta Library. This presentation is about Armenia and is intended for non-Armenian audiences.

Armen is a photographer who has traveled extensively worldwide. Always on the go in search of the new, the unique and the different, she has taken her camera from China to Spain and the Americas from the north to the south. Everywhere she goes, Armen captures the reality of the places and the people from a perspective of the teacher, social worker, dancer and the artist that she is. Her subjects, be it a person or an inanimate object, convey a sense of reality, of a condition that is well familiar to all but becomes conspicuous only through the lens of her camera.

PASADENA HERITAGE PRESENTS: 2019 WALKING TOURS

Throughout 2019 Pasadena Heritage will offer several walking tours of the city’s landmark districts. Tours include exteriors only. Starting locations and parking information will be available upon purchase of tickets.

Price for each tour is $20 non-members, $18 members.

On Saturday, Feb. 9 from 9 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. the Madison Heights Neighborhood will be explored.

This neighborhood is one of Pasadena’s most historically and architecturally significant. Almost every one of Pasadena’s famed designers is represented in this neighborhood. Greene & Greene, Frederick Louis Roehrig, Sylvanus Marston, Reginald Johnson, Heineman & Heineman, Hunt & Grey, and Louis B. Easton all designed homes in Madison Heights. Many other homes in the neighborhood were contractor-built, with the result that the neighborhood became a showcase for the builders to demonstrate what could be done on a modest scale. As a result, many of the houses have rich detail without being showy or ostentatious.

‘JAZZ NIGHT AT THE CAFÉ’

It’s time to dance away the post-holiday blues at the fantastically fun CVHS Jazz Night at the Café dance!

IS MY HOUSE HISTORIC? QUESTION PROBED AT HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Author, historian and preservationist Charles J. Fisher will be the guest speaker at the Feb. 9 Little Landers Historical Society second Saturday historical educational program.

The City of Los Angeles has designated over 1,100 sites as Historic Cultural Monuments – many of them are residences. February’s program will let attendees know how to determine if their home or another interesting site is historic.

Fisher has successfully steered well over 100 sites through the process to achieve monument status. He will talk about the benefits of Historic Cultural Monument designations and will share what makes a structure or location historic. Even visitors who may not be interested in pursuing monument status will learn how to research the history of their homes and other sites.

This event is free and open to the public and everyone is welcome. It will be held at Bolton Hall Museum, 10110 Commerce Ave. in Tujunga at 1 p.m.

‘CRUISING THE BALTIC SEA’ ON SIERRA CLUB AGENDA

The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club presents Bruce Hale’s, “Cruising the Baltic Sea,” on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library, 2809 Foothill Blvd., La Crescenta.

Hale is a world traveler and frequent Sierra Club presenter. He brings with interest and experiences his view of the seven Baltic countries, their special Old World charm and great natural scenic beauty. Starting in Copenhagen with its iconic landmark, then on to Gdansk, a vibrant city full of Polish history and culture, we “sail” to Riga and Tallinn, two medieval cities in Latvia and Estonia. Then it’s on to the 18th century imperial glories of St. Petersburg, Russia, and then Helsinki built over a peninsula and replete with neo-classical buildings. The tour ends in Stockholm, Sweden’s capital city build on a cluster of islands and famous for the annual Nobel Prize.

The program brings following news of conservation and outings. This is a free event and everyone is welcome. Refreshments will be served.

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
