ART ALLIANCE OF IDYLLWILD HOSTS ANNUAL ART FAIR
On Saturday, Feb. 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., visitors to the mountain artist community of Idyllwild will be treated to local art that is all priced under $100. Hosted by the Art Alliance of Idyllwild (AAI), the 3rd Annual Under $100 Art Fair will feature 19 individual artist booths. From 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Middle Ridge Winery and the AAI will host an open-to-the-public artist reception at the newly opened Middle Ridge Winery Tasting Gallery. Located in the heart of Idyllwild at 54301 N. Circle Drive, the gallery’s inaugural exhibit showcases AAI Artist of the Year winners and top volunteer artist members in a show appropriately titled The Idyllwild Collection: Best in Show.

AUTHORS TO TALK AND SIGN AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE
On Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse presents a conversation and booksigning with two Penguin Random House authors – J. Ryan Stradal, author of the award-winning novel “Kitchens of the Great Midwest,” and Ashley Warlick, author of the “The Arrangement” (releasing Feb. 9).

Stradal’s is a contemporary story about a chef’s unlikely rise to international fame. Warlick’s is a fictional imagining of the life of celebrated food writer M.F.K. Fisher who rose to prominence in Los Angeles in the 1930s. The protagonists of both novels are complex and charismatic women who thwart convention to follow their passions.

The interconnection of food and love plays a central role in the narratives of Stradal and Warlick, whose discussion touches on this dynamic as well as their individual approaches to storytelling and how their personal backgrounds inform their work.

All are invited to join these accomplished young authors on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. for a lively dialogue about writing and the confluence of food and love.

Then on Thursday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse hosts a book signing for Los Angeles writer Erin Aubry Kaplan, author of “I Heart Obama,” a personal and cultural exploration of Barack Obama as black president, black icon and black folk hero.

In his nearly two terms as President, Obama has solidified his status as something black people haven’t had for 50 years: a folk hero. The 1960s delivered Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, who took on racism and died in the process. Obama is different: not an outsider, but head of the most powerful state in the world; a centrist Democrat, not the face of a movement. Yet he is every bit a folk hero, doing battle with the beast of a system created to keep people like him on the margins. Journalist Erin Aubry Kaplan offers an unapologetic appreciation of our highest-ranking “First” and what he means to black Americans. CVUMC PRESENTS ‘AN ACT OF LOVE’
Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church is hosting a special one-time screening of the new film “An Act of Love” on Friday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. at CVUMC, 2700 Montrose Ave.

This compelling documentary follows Rev. Frank Schaefer when he was put on trial in the United Methodist Church for officiating his son’s same-sex wedding. The Schaefer family was pulled into a movement for LGBTQ equality in the nation’s second largest protestant denomination. “An Act of Love” follows Rev. Schaefer’s journey from small-town minister to outspoken advocate, as well as the ongoing debate in the United Methodist Church over LGBTQ inclusion.

PIANO SPHERES FREE WORKSHOP

LANTERMAN PRESENTS EQUESTRIAN HISTORY
The Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation in La Cañada will unveil its new special exhibition on Feb. 21 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Titled, “Historic Trails: The Equestrian History of the Crescenta/Cañada Valley.” The exhibition will focus on the changing role of the horses and trails in local history, from a necessity for survival to a source of recreation.  The exhibition will run through Dec. 22. Items on display will be from the Lanterman House archives, especially the La Cañada Trails Council Collection, and from current members of the Trails Council.

The first part of the exhibition will focus on the agrarian origins of the Crescenta Valley, while the second part will concentrate on the development of Flintridge and the equestrian lifestyle. Visitors will be able to trace the evolution of Flintridge, its hotel, country club, riding trails, and horse properties. The exhibition will then explore the history of the Flintridge Riding Club. The final installment focuses on the origins of the La Cañada Trails Council, preservation of the trails system, and the ongoing work of the Trails Council.

Admission to the opening day (Feb. 21) is free, and there will be a full schedule of exhibition-related events during 2016. After the opening day, admission to the nearly year-long exhibition will be $5 for adults and $3 for students ages 12-18 as well as seniors. Children under the age of 12 are free with adult admission. Tours of the Lanterman House are provided on Tuesday, Thursday, and the first and third Sundays of each month from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Caltech Theatre presents a musical parody based upon “Star Trek.” “Boldly Go!” follows the intrepid crew of the Starship Enterprise, along with some new characters, on an exciting and hilarious adventure.

‘BELUGA’S JOURNEY’ AT ADAMS SQUARE MINI-PARK
The Adams Hill Neighborhood Association is sponsoring “Beluga’s Journey,” an installation by artist YaYa Chou, which is mounted in the historic Adams Square gas station. This exhibition is the fourth in a series of site-specific installations supported by the City of Glendale and the Glendale Arts & Culture Commission with funding from the Urban Art Fund.

“Beluga’s Journey” is part of a traveling temporary public art project designed to raise awareness of wild animals in peril. The installation consists of an artist-designed inflatable in the shape of a beluga whale. “Beluga’s Journey” was initiated in 2008 after the deaths of several beluga whales in aquariums and zoos around the world.

The exhibition is on view through March 9.

PASADENA FESTIVAL OF WOMEN AUTHORS
The 8th Annual Pasadena Festival of Women Authors will be held on Saturday, April 9 at the Pasadena Hilton Hotel from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The festival will feature Jane Smiley, author of the Pulitzer-Prize-winning novel, “A Thousand Acres,” and Kristin Hannah, author of the 2015 Goodreads Historical Fiction Choice Award winning novel, “The Nightingale,” as well as five other acclaimed authors – Cynthia Bond, Jan Ellison, Nayomi Munaweera, Victoria Patterson and Maggie Shipstead.

The Pasadena Festival of Women Authors brings together a group of diverse, well-published authors to discuss their work with enthusiastic readers whose love of literature inspired the event. All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
