FUTURE OF BOY SCOUTS TOPIC OF KIWANIS CLUB GLENDALE

Mark Kraus, scout executive of the Boys Scouts of America – Verdugo Hills Council, will be the guest speaker of the Feb. 22 meeting of the Kiwanis Club Glendale. He will be talking about how the organization is changing.

Guests are welcome at the lunch meeting. The cost to attend, which includes lunch, is $15. Meeting starts at noon.

‘AVENUE Q’ COMING TO CALTECH

The award-winning “Avenue Q” is a coming-of-age parable, satirizing the issues and anxieties associated with entering adulthood. The musical opens at the Caltech Theater/Ramo Auditorium on Feb. 22 and closes March 3, Fridays/Saturdays from 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. The musical makes use of puppets, animated by puppeteers alongside human actors. Directed by Dr. Teagan Wall (CNS ’15), Q brings her back to Caltech to “work with the wonderful nerds she loves.” 

The music and lyrics were written by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx; the book by Jeff Whitty. Rated R.

Admission is $18 for general public, $9 for staff and faculty and $5 for students.

‘THERE’S NO END TO HER’ PRESENTED BY ace/121 GALLERY

ace/121 Gallery presented “There’s No End to Her,” an exhibit that seeks to decolonize the imposed separation of self to nature. The works exhibited present a feminized version of both the Earth and people’s relationship to it in stark contrast to the violent and oppressive vision of a colonialist planet. Rather than being gendered as female, the artwork in There’s No End to Her is a fluid interpretation of the word “feminine,” here defined as an appreciation for the intuitive relationship of a person – and body – to environment through an unrestricted connection to landscape.

Opening reception is Feb. 22 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

DEMO CLUB TO HEAR FROM SHERIFF CIVILIAN OVERSIGHT COMMISSION

Attorney Brian K. Williams, executive director of the Civilian Oversight Commission, will speak to the Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club on Sunday, Feb. 24 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living in La Crescenta.

The Oversight Commission was formed in 2016 “to promote transparency in law enforcement and restore public trust.” Interest in the LA County Sheriff’s Dept. (LASD) has been high since the historic election of Sheriff Alex Villanueva in November 2018. The LASD serves Los Angeles County – an area totaling approximately 4,084 square miles with a population of almost 10 million people. It is the largest sheriff’s department in the world, with approximately 18,000 employees.

In addition to the speaker, club business will be addressed by president Lora de la Portilla.

ATTENTION MUSIC LOVERS

Dr. Ted Stern, a professor of music, is again conducting a series of music appreciation classes for adults in the community. This is the 18th consecutive year of classes for non-musicians and musicians alike that explore the histories of composers and their music. The topic for this new series is “Musicals in the 20th Century” (years 1960-2000).

The 10-week series of classes began Jan. 29; classes are from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and continue every Tuesday through April 2 at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church cultural hall, 2700 Montrose Ave. in Montrose.

LIVING WITH PURPOSE, ON PURPOSE?

Little Landers Historical Society is hosting world traveler and international speaker Colin Wright on Saturday, March 9 at 1 p.m. He will speak about how people perceive the world, how they behave based on those perceptions and how they can become who they need to be to face the challenges of today and the future.

Colin Wright has authored over 30 books and is the blogger behind Exile Lifestyle. He also hosts the “Let’s Know Things” podcast that he broadcasts from many exotic locations while traveling.

LIFE AND WORKS OF ARCHITECT S. CHARLES LEE

Los Angeles historian Eric Lynxwiler will give a presentation on Sunday, March 10 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Alex Theatre on the legendary theatre architect S. Charles Lee who, in 1940, re-designed the Alex Theatre’s facade into an Art Deco/Moderne neon masterpiece. Lee’s other notable projects include the Tower Theatre (1927) and the lavish Los Angeles Theatre (1931) in Downtown LA.

Lynxwiler’s talk will be followed by an exclusive architectural and backstage tour of the Alex Theatre. Built in 1925 and designed by architects Charles R. Selkirk and Arthur G. Lindley, the Alexander Theatre, as it was originally known, features Greek and Egyptian motifs and is listed on the Glendale Register of Historic Resources (No. 20), as well as on the National Register of Historic Places.

THEODORE PAYNE FOUNDATION ON SIERRA CLUB ROSTER

The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club Group will feature the Theodore Payne Foundation, with spokesperson Lily Singer, on Tuesday, March 12 at

Lily Singer’s topic will be “Benefits of California Native Plants Landscape.” The Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers and Native Plants is a private non-profit organization founded in 1960 to promote the understanding and preservation of California plants.

TOWNE SINGERS EXTENDS INVITATION

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
