THEATER ARTS CALTECH PRESENTS ‘BOLDLY GO!’
Caltech Theatre presents a musical parody based upon “Star Trek.” “Boldly Go!” follows the intrepid crew of the Starship Enterprise, along with some new characters, on an exciting and hilarious adventure.

Assumptions will be confronted, paradigms challenged, alliances tested, and new contacts made – whether for good or ill as yet to be seen. And it¹s all set to a side-splitting tour de force of musical mayhem!

KALEIDOSCOPE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA TO PERFORM
The Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra will be presenting two performances of its third concert series of the season on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 8 p.m. at the Glendale City Church, 610 E. California Ave. in downtown Glendale and on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Santa Monica.

The program will consist of the “L’Ascension” by Oliver Messiaen and the west coast premiere of the “Bass Clarinet Concerto” by Jonathan Russell. Benjamin Mitchell, founder and president of the orchestra, will be the featured bass clarinet soloist.

The Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra is an innovative arts organization currently in its second season and has performed over 10 programs in more than 15 locations around Southern California including Zipper Hall, The Los Angeles Theater Center, First Presbyterian Church in Santa Monica and Glendale City Church.

SYRIAN SPEAKER ADDRESSES DEMO CLUB
Dr. Adnan Aswad, an expatriate of Syria, will give an overview of the geography and history of the Middle East and the roots of what led to the present tragic state of chaos in Syria when he speaks to the Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club on Sunday, Feb. 28 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the home of Celina Lew and Dr. Ed Castro in La Cañada.

Dr. Aswad will cover the current tragic state of Syrian refugees and offer possible conditions for a peaceful resolution, along with his personal experiences. Dr. Aswad is professor emeritus of engineering at the University of Michigan.

GAMC TO HOST HEART HEALTHY FOOD TASTING EVENT
Glendale Adventist Medical Center (GAMC) will be hosting an international food festival with healthy heart options for patients, visitors and staff who are on campus on Monday, Feb. 29. FORMER CHIEF FORESTER TO SPEAK IN DESCANSO GARDENS
Paul Rippens, former chief forester for the County of Los Angeles, will speak at the next meeting of the Pacific Camellia Society in Descanso Gardens. Most people do not know that Los Angeles County has a forestry department with a chief forester and that the county operates a nursery in the mountains above Pasadena. Rippens will explain all this and also give a brief history of the forestry department and its relationship to the fire department.
Dr. Bradford King, editor of the American Camellia Society publication Camellia Journal, will also speak at the meeting. His presentation will include showing some of his beautiful pictures illustrating the surprising number of different sizes and shapes of camellias.

The meeting will be on Thursday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Descanso Gardens. Membership in Pacific Camellia Society is not required to attend. The meeting is open to the general public and admission is free.

VON DOHNANYI ON MUSIQUES ROSTER
The next presentation of Salon de Musiques is on March 6 and features the music of Hungarian master Ernst von Dohnanyi. BOOKSIGNING AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE
On Sunday, March 6 at 4 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse hosts a book signing for historians Darryl Holter and William Deverell and artist Jon Stich, whose book “Woody Guthrie L.A. 1937 to 1941” was recently released by Angel City Press.  Holter, a musician himself, performs a sampling of Guthrie’s songs.

The first book to thoroughly explore the legendary folk singer’s time in Los Angeles, “Woody Guthrie L.A. 1937 to 1941” argues that Guthrie’s brief residence in the city in the later years of the Great Depression forever changed his music, his politics, and his enduring legacy. Those changes became the basis of his incredible influence on the world’s music.

The book’s 12 essays, richly illustrated by photographs from the era, explore such themes as Guthrie’s early radio success in Los Angeles with the “Woody and Lefty Lou Show;” his first recordings made on old Presto disks; and the important friendship he forged with the actor and leftist radical Will Geer (later of “Grandpa Walton” fame).

KAT HIGH AT NEXT CV SIERRA CLUB MEETING
The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club Group presents Kat High’s, “Traditional California Indian Relationships” on Tuesday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library.

High will give a presentation on gathering for balance. This is based on traditional California Indian relationships with the land and will include handouts and the tasting of native foods. PANEL DISCUSSION WITH CRIME/THRILLER AUTHORS

‘BELUGA’S JOURNEY’ AT ADAMS SQUARE MINI-PARK
The Adams Hill Neighborhood Association is sponsoring “Beluga’s Journey,” an installation by artist YaYa Chou, which is mounted in the historic Adams Square gas station. This exhibition is the fourth in a series of site-specific installations supported by the City of Glendale and the Glendale Arts & Culture Commission with funding from the Urban Art Fund.

“Beluga’s Journey” is part of a traveling temporary public art project designed to raise awareness of wild animals in peril. The installation consists of an artist-designed inflatable in the shape of a beluga whale. “Beluga’s Journey” was initiated in 2008 after the deaths of several beluga whales in aquariums and zoos around the world.

The exhibition is on view through March 9.

THE FURST FAMILY & NAZI SPIES?
Were there World War II Nazi Spies right in our own backyard? Come to the next Little Landers Historical Society monthly program on March 12 at 1 p.m. at Bolton Hall and learn more about the German immigrant Furst family and the Castle they built high on a hill above their restaurant in Shadow Hills.

Speaker Don Ray is an investigative journalist who has researched the Furst family and their restaurant, the Old Vienna Café (Villa Cinzano) on Sunland Boulevard.  Come to this program and learn more about this local family accused of WWII espionage and what happened to them.

ART ALLIANCE OF IDYLLWILD HOSTS ANNUAL FUNDRAISER
On Saturday, March 12 from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m., the Art Alliance of Idyllwild will be hosting one of its largest fundraisers of the year, Eye of the Artist. RAGTIME TEA DANCE PLANNED
The Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation will host its annual Ragtime Tea Dance on March 13 from noon to 5 p.m. The tea dance will feature musicians Ian Whitcomb, Sheila-Murphy Nelson and others. PASADENA HERITAGE SPRING HOME TOUR AND LECTURE
Pasadena Heritage Spring Home Tour is a drive-yourself tour featuring examples of Pasadena’s great architects and their private residences with experienced docents providing guided tours at each location. It takes place on Sunday, March 20 from

ARMENIA: AN OPEN WOUND EXHIBITION AT BRAND LIBRARY
The City of Glendale and the Library, Arts & Culture Dept. present the exhibition “Armenia: An Open Wound” in partnership with the Armenian American Museum. “Armenia: An Open Wound” debuted in Mexico City at the Museo Memoria Y Tolerancia [Museum of Tolerance] in April 2015 in honor of the Armenian Genocide centenary. The exhibition explores the intricate history of the Armenian people and creates an interactive experience by illustrating early Armenian culture; it shares the story of Armenian livelihoods on their ancestral lands, and prepares viewers to gain a deeper insight into the events that lead to the 1915 Armenian Genocide.

These courses help empower a person with the knowledge to overcome financial stress to prosper in life. Each course is $50, is done at the individual’s own pace and timing is flexible. A stress-free financial future can be attained and having the right knowledge can make all the difference.

FOOTHILLS PRO GROUP
The Foothills Professional Group meets every Wednesday morning from 7:45 a.m. to 9 a.m. at Leon Lounge and Café. The group provides a structured and supportive system of giving and receiving business. It does so by providing an environment in which participants develop personal relationships with many other qualified business professionals. By establishing this “formal” relationship with other people, you may have the opportunity to substantially increase your business.

Depression Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) has a support group meeting every Tuesday at Vallejo Drive Adventist Church in Glendale every Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. DBSA provides hope, help, and support through peer-based, recovery oriented empowering services, and resources when people need them and how they need to receive them.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY
The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. Arrangements can be made to pick up large donations. Call the library at (818) 352-4481 to schedule a pick-up.

TOPS OFFERS LOCAL MEETINGS
T.O.P.S. – Take Off Pounds Sensibly – is a self-accountability group meeting held every Monday. Weigh in is from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS
The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
