LEONIS ADOBE MUSEUM INFO AT KIWANIS CLUB

On March 6 at its noon meeting, the Kiwanis Club of Glendale hosts Dinna Pitt from the Leonis Adobe Museum.

Guests are welcome at the weekly lunch meeting. The cost to attend, which includes lunch, is $15. Meetings start at noon.

LOCAL YOGA CLASS

Gentle/level one yoga classes for people over 50 meet twice a week at The Center for Spiritual Living on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. and Friday at 10:30 a.m.

This class focuses on improved joint mobility, flexibility, muscle strength and balance and will include some restorative yoga poses to help the body heal its own aches and pains by engaging the parasympathetic system. Sessions will be 75 minutes. Instructor is experienced in many forms of yoga.

WORKSHOPS AT LA CRESCENTA LIBRARY

A Salsa and Latin dancing workshop takes place at the La Crescenta Library on Saturday, March 7 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Learn the basic of Salsa dance steps. It is a great way to boost the confidence level while having a lot of fun.

On Wednesday, March 11 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., join artist Claudia Hindu for a hands-on clay sculpture workshop to learn the fundamentals of working with clay and the techniques to create different textures. All supplies will be provided. Participants will be able to create a unique piece to take home. Space is limited. First come, first served. These programs are free.

CALTECH ORCHESTRA PRESENTS ‘MASTERWORKS’

The Caltech Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Glenn D. Price, presents “Masterworks” on Saturday, March 7 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 8 at 3 p.m. in Ramo Auditorium; both feature the same program.

EMBODIMENT WORKSHOP FOR CANCER PATIENTS

A three-session women’s embodiment workshop for cancer patients will be held at the Cancer Support Community-Pasadena on the following Mondays: March 9, 16, and 23 from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Attendance is free of charge.

Tarnie Fulloon will demonstrate how to uncover the messages the body is holding about one’s thoughts and feelings. Movement, meditation, breathwork and other techniques will help attendees with healing and generate vitality and inner freedom.

Then on March 10 from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. there will be discussion for cancer patients about a pilgrimage through parts of France and Spain via the Camino De Santiago. Attendance is free of charge.

Britta Amundsen will tell how she walked the French route through the northern part of Spain and the additional route to Finistere and Muxia – a total of 500 miles. The presentation will cover basics about the Camino, including history of the route as well as details of Britta’s personal pilgrimage.

PHOTOGRAPHER COOK AT CRESCENTA VALLEY SIERRA CLUB GROUP

The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club Group presents wildlife and landscape photographer Greg Cook on Tuesday, March 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library.

Cook has an extensive collection of photos of polar bears, grizzly bears, penguins, humpback whales and the birds found in Southern California. His landscapes offer Antarctica, Western United States and Canada.

MARCH DOC TALK LECTURE

ace/121 PRESENTS ‘WHAT SHE SAID’

The exhibition “What She Said” at ace/121 Gallery includes 2D, 3D and performance art, as well as free public programming. The show places focus on feminist strategies that address current dystopian reality. The artwork in the show addresses the way an oracular vision speaks to society today in a digital culture, integrating gazes, voices and experiences.

The exhibit continues through March 13. Presented by ace/121 Gallery & The Association of Hysteric Curators.

WHY IS HOLLYWOOD HERE?

All are invited to Bolton Hall Museum at 1 p.m. on March 14 when the Little Landers Historical Society provides a look at the history of the American film industry in Southern California. This program focuses on the reasons the film industry first came to Southern California and what part the local community played in the early days of filming.

The speaker for this program, E.J. Stephens, is a Hollywood historian who has written a dozen books about the Southern California film industry and is the creator of the Newhallywood Silent Film Festival and Newhallywood Tours that gives guests a look at film sites around Southern California.

This event is free and open to the public and everyone is welcome.

ACCESS: A CENTURY AFTER WOMEN’S RIGHT TO VOTE

2020 marks the centennial of women’s suffrage, a milestone in U.S. history when women succeeded in gaining access to the political process with the right to vote.

The latest exhibit at ReflectSpace gallery at the Glendale Central Library, Access: A Century After Women’s Right to Vote, examines the past 100 years of women’s rights through the work of several contemporary women artists, and considers the role of women today and their access to positions of power.

In partnership with the Glendale Commission on the Status of Women, Access will be on exhibit through March 15. Artists in the exhibition include Kim Abeles, April Bey, Joey Forsyte, Erika Rothenberg and the Las Fotos Project.

Effective April 1, Bolton Hall Museum will be open to visitors on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Museum will be closed on Tuesdays after April 1.

The change to Saturday and Sunday afternoons makes it possible for Little Landers Historical Society and Bolton Hall Museum to serve a higher number of visitors who want to learn more about the rich history of the local community.

PERFORMANCE ARTISTS SOUGHT

The Glendale Arts and Culture Commission invites both new and established artists and performance groups of three or more performers to apply for a spot in its 2020 performance series. The Commission will host a variety of performance experiences every Friday at 7 p.m. from June through July 2020 at the Brand Library & Art Center Outdoor Plaza, and every Saturday in October 2020 at the Artsakh Paseo.

The City of Glendale’s Performance Series, now in its sixth year, provides a free cultural asset to residents and attracts visitors to experience arts and cultural opportunities. This program has been designed to support various arts organizations and to bring distinguished cultural programming to Glendale. TUJUNGA’S MID-CENTURY MODERN HOMES

Little Landers Historical Society invites visitors to view a recently installed temporary exhibit at Bolton Hall Museum featuring mid-century modern homes. The exhibit presents the innovative residential architecture of mid-century Tujunga, and pays tribute to a few of the internationally renowned architects who designed and built cutting-edge dwellings in the area during the Atomic Age.

World-class architects Pierre Koenig, Richard Neutra and Eugene Weston III – who were responsible for introducing radical new ideas in floor plan, materials and energy-efficiency through their work for local clients – are featured in the exhibit. Their experimental designs influenced countless imitators, among them, Victor Sease, local developer of Tujunga’s Descanso Tract and Manzanita Slope Development, two of the largest, mostly intact modernist housing developments in Tujunga.

BILINGUAL PROGRAM AT GLENDALE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

A bilingual Armenian/English program entitled “Take Your Life Back After Cancer” is presented at Glendale Memorial Hospital on Wednesdays from 5.30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The program is free of charge to the public.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and A1C and tools for a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of complications.
