PETERSON TO ADDRESS REPUBLICANS

The chairman of the chamber of commerce and former president of the La Cañada school board will address members of the La Cañada Flintridge Republican Club on Wednesday, March 30 at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club. Joel Peterson’s presentation will cover “The challenges faced by our schools and what we should be doing about it.” He will be talking to members of the 100-plus organization and guests of the local Republican organization at their monthly dinner meeting. The group gathers at 6:30 p.m., dinner is at 7:00 p.m. Peterson will talk after dinner.

BONE MARROW DRIVE AT
GLENDALE MEMORIAL

Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center in conjunction with the Armenian Bone Marrow Registry will be hosting a bone marrow drive on Thursday, March 31 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the hospital auditorium.

The Drive is being held to help find a donor for 26-year-old Steve Bodozian who is currently suffering from acute myeloid leukemia.

MAGICIAN NEXT LEISURE CLUB GUEST

HIGH SCHOOL REUNION PLANNED

Anderson W. Clark Junior High School, (now Crescenta Valley High) class of 1956 is having a reunion on Saturday, April 2 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the La Crescenta Woman’s Club. DOLL SHOW COMING TO CIVIC

The Jewel City Doll Club will be presenting on March 26 a wide variety of old and new dolls to the public at their show and sale. At this event a collection of unusual antique and vintage dolls will be available. In addition, the show will have old and unique toys along with miniatures and books. WAW HOLDING TALENT CONTEST

Applications are being accepted for the Second Annual “WAW California Starz Talent Contest” on May 7 at noon at the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge. WAW Talent Training Studios and The Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge are hosting this community-wide event that showcases the talent of local kids ages 7 to 21. First, second and third places will be awarded in each of four categories: vocal performance, instrumental performance, dance and beauty. Winners will receive cash and prizes

NOON CONCERTS OPEN TO PUBLIC

Glendale Noon Concerts is a free admission concert series taking place every first and third Wednesday from 12:10-12:40 p.m. in the newly restored chapel and sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Glendale (downtown at Louise & Wilson, no religious affiliation).

The next concert features the Fiato String Quartet on Wednesday, April 6 The quartet will perform Giacomo Puccini Crisantemi and Ludwig Van Beethoven String Quartet No.16 in F major, Op.135.

The quartet is composed of performers Carrie Kennedy – violin, Ina Veli – violin, Charle Hebenstreit – viola, and Ryan Sweeney – violoncello.

Moonday East, the newly opened sister of Moonday in the Village, will be featuring poet Neil McCarthy on Sunday, March 27 at 2 p.m. at Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse in La Cañada.

Moonday is hosted by Alice Pero and Lois P. Jones. The readings will take place on the third Sunday of every month (with March as an exception) from 2 to 4 p.m. There will be a feature and open mic.  Come early to sign up for the open.

KERTES ON DISPLAY AT DESCANSO

Trish Kertes’s “Nature’s Beauty” art exhibit continues at Descanso Gardens in the Heritage Art Gallery at the historic Boddy House.  The exhibit runs through April. Boddy House hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday through the spring. Free with admission: $8 adults, $6 senior/students and $3 children 5-12.

BABYSITTING CLASSES OFFERED AT VHH

The Verdugo Hills Hospital Beginnings Family Education Program offers babysitting classes designed for boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 15. The babysitting class is an interactive course that teaches participants valuable skills, including infant/child CPR, basic first aid, home/auto safety, accident prevention, telephone skills, safety tips, when to call 911, poison control, fire/earthquake plans and other helpful childcare advice. Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a babysitting course completion certificate.

Upcoming babysitting classes are held on: March 19, April 30 and May 21. Each class is a single, one-time class, held from 9 am to 2:30

pm.

DANCEART AT MCGROARTY

Benita Bike’s DanceArt presents an outdoor performance at the historic McGroarty Arts Center on Sunday, April 3 at 3:00 pm. This is a free event.

For at least a decade, Benita Bike’s DanceArt has presented interactive dance performances in the living room of the McGroarty Arts Center. In honor of its 30th anniversary, DanceArt will present its unique dance program – a combination of contemporary dance performance and audience interaction – outdoors in front of the Center’s historic McGroarty House.

ELLIOT SPEAKING AT LITTLE LANDERS

Experience “…. a date which will live in infamy” with someone who was actually there.  The next speaker at the Little Landers Historical Society on Saturday, April 9 at 1 pm. is H. H. “Curly” Elliot.  Curly was in the military on Dec. 7, 1941 and lived through the attack at Pearl Harbor.  Curly will recount his experiences of that day and those that followed, as well as his life in the military during WWII.

This program is the perfect companion to Bolton Hall Museum’s new exhibit “On The Front and On The Home Front” which acknowledges and celebrates the accomplishments and sacrifices of those who served America in the military and those who kept going at home during the war years.

THE STORY OF EASTER IN STAINED GLASS

Forest Lawn Museum in Glendale is hosting “Light & Passion,” stained glass windows depicting the story of Easter. The display continues through June and will be from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.  Closed Monday.

“Light & Passion” features six large stained glass windows that recount events during the passion while capturing the nature of Christ’s relationships with his beloved mother and disciples. The windows include portrayals of Jesus saying farewell to his mother before leaving for the Last Supper; Judas leading the guards to the Garden of Gethsemane; Peter, James, and John, asleep in the Garden of Gethsemane; Christ carrying his cross followed by his mother and John the Disciple; Christ on the Cross, with his mother, John and Mary Magdalene; and, Mary sitting with the cloth.

PASADENA FESTIVAL OF WOMEN AUTHORS

The Pasadena Festival of Women Authors brings together diverse and well-published award winning Southern California authors to discuss their work and support the Pasadena Senior Center, a valued Pasadena community institution.

Authors Naomi Hirahara, Attica Locke, Maile Meloy, Marianne Wiggins will be showcased on Saturday, April 2 from 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Moderator is noovelist Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey.

Each author will speak and books will be available for purchase and signing. Lunch will be served. Tickets are $80 per person. Proceeds will benefit the Pasadena Senior Center.

CVHS CHORAL ALUMS WANTED

Former members of choral groups at Crescenta Valley High School are invited to take part in the CVHS Alumni Chorale. The group, composed of CVHS choral alumni men and women, rehearse once a week on Wednesdays from 7:15 p.m. – 9:15 p.m., at the Glendale First United Methodist Church. The group performs for local civic groups and retirement homes in Pasadena, Glendale, La Crescenta, Montrose and Duarte during the holiday season and again in the late spring/early summer. After the holiday season performances the group will resume rehearsals in the middle of January 2011.
