The Glendale Art Association April meeting is at BMAI (note new location) on Thursday, April 13 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

CLINTON AT HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Historical Society of the Crescenta Valley presents Edmond J. Clinton III discussing and signing “Clifton’s and Clifford Clinton: A Cafeteria and a Crusader” at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 17 at the Center for Spiritual Living-La Crescenta.

“Clifton’s Cafeteria” might just be the most famous restaurant in the history of L.A. Not just because of the movie stars who showed up (there were plenty), but because real people ate there. Millions of them since 1931. Nobody forgot that if a hungry person couldn’t pay, that was okay.

The Golden Rule: That’s what the place was all about. So everybody came. Clifford Clinton owned Clifton’s – all of them – and everything he did was about doing unto others. Nobody was going hungry on his watch.

And when he saw corruption in his City of Angels, he went after it. He led a campaign to recall the mayor. He cleaned up the town. His story is as good as it gets –straight outta Raymond Chandler, only real – and Clifford Clinton’s never-published story, and more stuff about L.A., won’t be believed.

‘MAN MADE’ COMING TO BRAND LIBRARY

Brand Library & Art Center presents Man Made, an exhibition that explores the urban ecology of our built environment through the distinctive artwork of seven women: Jacqueline Bell Johnson, Anita Bunn, Chelsea Dean, Jennifer Gunlock, Jenene Nagy, Michelle Robinson and Sinziana Velicescu. Each artist, through her own unique practice, honors the physical act of creation and expands the language of environmental engagement. By exploring different ways of seeing, representing and connecting ubiquitous forms, shapes and objects in our surroundings, the artist abstracts reality, resulting in beautiful, anomalous truths, seemingly prophetic vistas, and meticulously rendered constructions.

The exhibition will be on view through May 6.

BOOK SIGNING FOR SWEENEY

On Wednesday, May 3 at 1 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse hosts a talk and signing for Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney, author of “The Nest.” The book, just released in paperback, is a warm, funny and acutely perceptive debut novel about four adult siblings and the fate of the shared inheritance that has shaped their choices and their lives.

Every family has its problems, but the Plumb family stands out as spectacularly dysfunctional. Years of simmering tensions finally reach a breaking point on a cold afternoon in New York City as Melody, Beatrice, and Jack Plumb gather to confront their older brother, Leo, freshly released from rehab. Months earlier, an inebriated Leo got behind the wheel of a car with a 19-year-old waitress as his passenger. The ensuing accident has endangered the Plumbs’ joint trust fund, “The Nest,” which they are months away from finally receiving. Meant by their deceased father to be a modest mid-life supplement, the Plumb siblings have watched The Nest’s value soar along with the stock market and have been counting on the money to solve a number of self-inflicted problems.

In this tender, entertaining, and deftly written debut, Sweeney brings a remarkable cast of characters to life to illuminate what money does to relationships, what happens to our ambitions over the course of time, and the fraught yet unbreakable ties we share with those we love.

Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse is located at 1010 Foothill Blvd., La Cañada Flintridge, at the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and Angeles Crest Highway. For more information, call (818) 790-0717.
