At the April 26 meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Glendale Maureen Palacios, owner of Once Upon A Time bookstore in Montrose, will be the guest speaker.

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH CELEBRATED AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE

Throughout April, Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse celebrates National Poetry Month with special events.

Today, Thursday, April 25 at 6:30 p.m., Nare Garibyan will read selections from her book “When Ruins Speak: A Journey of Poems.” These poems chronicle the poet’s

journey to her lost homeland, in search of a connection to the land of her ancestors, now in ruin. Her travels take her to Western Armenia, present-day Eastern Turkey. They are written in an attempt to resuscitate the belief of empathic survival in a tumultuous world.

Don’t forget that April 27 is Independent Bookstore Day. Special programs will be held throughout the day.

Dignity Health Glendale Memorial Hospital 50plus Program offers monthly health and fitness lectures and classes and special discounts for those age 50 and older.

Traffic and Pedestrian Safety will be presented by Glendale Police Dept. PSO Armen Garabedian on April 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the John Stauffer Auditorium. DEMO CLUB TO HEAR VIEWS ON CARBON DIVIDEND BILL

Dr. Carlos Robles and Dr. John Odell will be the featured speakers at the Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club on Sunday, April 28 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living, 4845 Dunsmore Ave., La Crescenta. They’ll tackle House Bill 763, “The Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act,” and speak on “The Science, Economics and Politics” of the federal bill.

La Crescenta resident Carlos Robles is a marine ecologist concerned with the impact of global warming on the sea shore communities of the west coast.

John Odell is professor emeritus and former director, School of International Relations, USC. He has specialized in the governance of the world economy and the process of negotiating agreements over trade, finance, and climate.

BINGO FUNDRAISER

The Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge is hosting a bingo night on Friday, April 26 at the Center. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with first game at 6:30 p.m. All ages welcome with adult supervision. FREE PAINTING CLASS

A free introductory simple acrylic painting class is being offered on Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m. by the Church of Scientology Mission of the Foothills.

PFAR HAS TASTE FUNDRAISER

On Saturday, April 27 the Pasadena-Foothills Association of REALTORS® Charitable Foundation will kick-off its first fundraising event of the year with an all-new Taste Charity Event: PFAR Has Taste.

The Dilbeck residence will be hosting. Guests will enjoy a relaxing evening of delicious food, drinks, fun drawings and a live band.

GEMEINHART AT OUAT

Once Upon A Time bookstore is hosting award-winning middle grade author Dan Gemeinhart on Wednesday, May 1 at 7 p.m. at the bookstore. He will be reading from his newly released novel about a road-tripping dad and daughter, “The Remarkable Journey Of Coyote Sunrise.”

NOON CONCERTS OPEN TO PUBLIC

TEQUILA AND TACOS FRIEND RAISER

The Women’s Council of the USC Verdugo Hills Hospital Foundation is hosting a Tequila and Tacos Friend Raiser on Friday, May 3 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funds raised will be contributed to the Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit, which opened last year. The Women’s Council is soliciting funds to complete its $150,000 pledge that initiated the drive for this much-needed service at the community hospital.

CRIME PANEL DISCUSSION AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE

On Saturday, May 4 at 5 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse presents a panel discussion “From Murders and Psychic Frauds to ‘Dirty John:’ Exploring Old and New True Crime Stories.” The panel, led by CNN investigative reporter Melanie Hicken, includes journalist Christopher Goffard, whose podcast “Dirty John” was downloaded over 10 million times within six weeks of its release; investigative reporter and former TV anchor Barbara Schroeder; and forensic specialist Clark Fogg.

The La Cañada Presbyterian Church will be hosting a blood drive in Fellowship Hall on May 5 from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.

DINE-OUT TO SUPPORT LCFOG

La Cañada Flintridge Orthopaedic Guild (LCFOG) is holding a fundraiser at New Moon Restaurant in Montrose on Tuesday, May 7. During lunch, 11 a.m.- 3:30 p.m., and dinner, 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., 15% of purchases (including take-out) will help orthopaedically-challenged kids. RESTORATION EXPO IN GLENDALE

In celebration of National Preservation Month, The Glendale Historical Society (TGHS) is presenting its annual Restoration Expo on Saturday, May 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Glendale Civic Audi-torium.

The Restoration Expo is free and open to the public and will include tours of a restored 1928 Spanish Colonial Revival home located within walking distance of the Expo.

Owners of vintage properties – from Craftsman bungalows and Period Revivals to Mid-century Modern and Ranch-style homes – will have an opportunity to obtain useful information and resources from a variety of trades to assist them in preserving the original charm and character of older homes, while still meeting the needs of modern-day living. The Expo will showcase approximately 50 exhibitor booths featuring restoration specialists and contractors, landscape and interior design professionals, period and reproduction tile, lighting and hardware suppliers, decorative and functional artists and many other valuable resources.

BILL’S BEES STORY

Little Landers Historical Society hosts speaker Bill Lewis on May 11 at 1 p.m. for the story of local beekeeping and the importance of bees in people’s lives and the things people can do to help bees flourish.

Speaker Lewis has been keeping bees and harvesting honey in the San Gabriel Mountains since 1991. He is an active member and past president of the California State Beekeepers Association.

This event is held at Bolton Hall and is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome.

FASHION SHOW

BRUCE HALES PRESENTS ‘THE MYSTERIES OF EASTER ISLAND’

The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club presents Bruce Hale’s, “The Mysteries of Easter Island” on Tuesday, May 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the

Hales, a Sierra Club member and frequent presenter, will present a slide show describing his recent visit to this isolated island, now a part of Chile, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Learn about the Rapanui people who first arrived around the 5th Century. Today descendants still live on this tiny island.

AHEAD WITH HORSES ANNOUNCES FUN DAY 2019

AHEAD With Horses Inc., a nonprofit that maximizes the potential of disabled, disadvantaged and special needs children by providing developmental therapy, education and recreation through horses, will hold its 38th Annual Children’s Demonstration and Fun Day on Saturday, June 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The fundraiser for the therapeutic vaulting program will feature a barbecue lunch, games, arts and crafts, music, silent auction, T-shirt sales, massage booth, face painter and special gifts for all youngsters in attendance will be available.

Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door (tickets include the barbecue lunch): $14/adults, $7/children and kids under 3 are free.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
