RIBBON CUTTING FOR TRAVEL TOWN
Today, Thursday, May 10 at 10:30 a.m., a ribbon cutting is being held by Travel Town Museum Foundation for the Tracks to Learning project. Travel Town was selected as a winner in the competition of Let’s Play Everywhere LA. The competition awarded 10 grantees a total of up to $200,000 to fund creative ideas that will transform everyday spaces into fun, safe places to play.
The Let’s Play Everywhere LA project is a brand new permanent installation at Travel Town. It is centered around turning the previously plain concrete surface outside the Travel Town Volunteer Center and the Hershel O’Dell Research Library into a fun colorful network of painted railroad tracks that allow children to imagine themselves as railroad engines, leaning together with their peers how to form trains, switch cars, as well as the overall nature of track-based movement.

DAVIS, STANFORD AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE
Tonight, Thursday, May 10, at 7 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse hosts Craig Stanford, author of “The New Chimpanzee: A Twenty-First Century Portrait of Our Closest Kin.”
Recent discoveries about wild chimpanzees have reshaped the understanding of these apes and their kinship with humans. Chimpanzees not only have genomes similar to humans but also plot political coups, wage wars over territory, pass on cultural traditions to younger generations and ruthlessly strategize for resources, including sexual partners. In “The New Chimpanzee,” Stanford challenges readers to let apes guide human inquiry into what it means to be human.
On May 24 at 7 p.m., there will be a poetry/prose reading in conjunction with LGBTQ Pride Month. The event will be moderated by Tobi Harper, found and editor of Quill. Featured readers are novelist Martha K. Davis, playwright and author Josh Gershick, and poet Brandi Spaethe.
