SEEING EYE DOGS TOPIC OF KIWANIS MEETING

All are invited to the Friday, May 31 lunch meeting of the Glendale Kiwanis when a program on seeing eye dogs is presented.

Guests are welcome at the lunch meeting. The cost to attend, which includes lunch, is $15. Meeting starts at noon.

ace/121 Gallery presents glendaleOUT, a multi-venue LGBTQIA-based show, June 1 – July 13. The exhibit announces the existence of the Glendale queer population, that it is visible, is viable and is part of Glendale’s narrative. It also shares with Glendale and each other the stories of coming out – either to themselves, to friends, to families, in schools, at jobs, or any other way/place/moment.

FREE HIP-HOP DANCE LESSON

Learn how to hip-hop at a free class hosted by the Church of Scientology Mission of the Foothills on Saturday, June 1 from 10 a.m. until noon. The two-hour class will be taught by Audrey Curtis who has choreographed a number of public hip-hop performances.

PASADENA HERITAGE PRESENTS RESTORATION DAY

On Saturday, June 1 a series of workshops are offered by Pasadena Heritage for homeowners of historic houses. The workshops will be held at the Madison House, 651 S. St. John Ave. in Pasadena. Tickets are $10 per session or three sessions for $25.

Caring for an old house can sometimes be frustrating and confusing. Those who own a historic home are invited to come and learn some skills that will help in handling minor repairs or restoration projects and teach how to determine what work might need to be done. Various hands-on, small group workshops and presentations will be held that will equip homeowners with a wealth of knowledge. Opportunities include: from 10 a.m. to noon: House Sleuthing or Paint Stripping/Staining; from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.: How to Hire a Contractor or Window Restoration and Repairs; from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.: Researching Your House Online or It’s All in the Details – Using Salvaged Materials.

‘ELEVATE YOU’ HOSTED BY HEAL WITHIN

The 7th annual Women’s 3E event takes place on June 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Castaway in Burbank. The day focuses on “cooperation, genuine connections and powerful self-reflection.” There will be guest speakers, guided visualization and more. Tickets are $145. ‘JAZZY FLUTES’ COMING TO LC

The Song of the Angels Flute Orchestra, directed by Charles Fernandez, is having a Jazzy Flutes concert on June 2 in La Cañada. Performers include Ali Ryerson (alto flute), Fred Selden (flute), David Shostac (flute) and Madeline Vegari Neumann (vocals). The jazz trio of pianist Bryan Pezzone, drummer Brad Dutz and bassist John Leftwich will also perform. Works from Duke Ellington, Chikako Iversen, Victor Young, and many others will be showcased. Roland Tso’s “posse” of low flutes will be featured. Flutists in the audience are invited to join in for “Basin Street Blues.”

WOLOWNICK SPEAKING AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE

On Sunday, June 2 at 5 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore presents Dierdre Wolownick, record-breaking senior athlete, author and mother of renowned free solo rock climber Alex Honnold.

At 66, Wolownick became the oldest woman to climb El Capitan in Yosemite and in “The Sharp End of Life: A Mother’s Story” she shares her intimate journey, revealing how her climbing achievement reflects a broader story of courage and persistence.

NONPROFIT EXPO

ATTENTION MUSIC LOVERS

Dr. Ted Stern, a professor of music, is again conducting a series of music appreciation classes for adults in the community. This is the 18th consecutive year of classes for non-musicians and musicians alike that explore the histories of composers and their music. The topic for this new series is “The Versatile Violin and Her Virtuosos.”

The 10-week series of classes begin Tuesday, June 4. Classes are from 2 p.m.  to 4 p.m. and continue every Tuesday through Aug. 6. Classes are held at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church cultural hall, 2700 Montrose Ave. in Montrose.

LEGENDS OF THE HOLLYWOOD FOREVER CEMETERY

Little Landers Historical Society announces the next in its series of monthly 2nd Saturday historical and educational programs. All are invited to the free presentation at Bolton Hall Museum at 1 p.m. on June 8 for the story of Hollywood Forever Cemetery, the final resting place for many of Hollywood’s most famous characters.

Guest speaker E.J. Stephens and his wife Kim have authored books about Hollywood and Southern California history. They have their own travel company and host tours of film sites throughout Southern California.

This event is open to the public and all are welcome.

AHEAD WITH HORSES ANNOUNCES FUN DAY 2019

AHEAD With Horses Inc., a nonprofit that maximizes the potential of disabled, disadvantaged and special needs children by providing developmental therapy, education and recreation through horses, will hold its 38th Annual Children’s Demonstration and Fun Day on Saturday, June 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The fundraiser for the therapeutic vaulting program will feature a barbecue lunch, games, arts and crafts, music, silent auction, T-shirt sales, massage booth, face painter and special gifts for all youngsters in attendance will be available.

Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door (tickets include the barbecue lunch): $14/adults, $7/children and kids under 3 are free.

Demonstrations are from noon to 2 p.m.

MOROCCO ON SIERRA CLUB ROSTER

The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club group will feature John Fisanotti’s photographic presentation of Morocco on June 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library.

Fisanotti, a native of Southern California, developed a keen interest in astronomy at a young age and this led to his present interest in photography and an attempted eclipse photo. He studied at Glendale Community College and California State University, Los Angeles. His love of photographic art never waned and evidence of his devotion can be seen in galleries on his website including travel, outdoor (both scenic and astronomical) with publications and exhibits.

NEW BILINGUAL PROGRAM AT GLENDALE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

A new bi-lingual Armenian/English program entitled “Take Your Life Back After Cancer” is being presented at Glendale Memorial Hospital on Wednesdays from 5.30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The program is free of charge to the public.

FASHION SHOW AND LUNCHEON

The USCVHH Women’s Council is hosting a Roaring Twenties Fashion Show and Installation event on June 13 in the council rooms at the hospital. At this event the new board of directors will be installed and the final installment check will be presented to CEO Keith Hobbs. This will complete the $150,000 pledge made several years ago to initiate work on the Neontal Intensive Care Unit at the community hospital.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
