The Kiwanis Club of Glendale will be dark on Friday, June 21. Regular meetings resume on June 28.

Guests are welcome at the lunch meeting. The cost to attend, which includes lunch, is $15. Meeting starts at noon.

The Club meets Friday afternoons at the Elks Lodge, 120 E. Colorado Blvd. in Glendale.

 

LCF CHAMBER PLANS MIXER

The La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce and Community Association is having an after hours get together mixer at the Flintridge Riding Club on Thursday, June 20 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Admission is $10 for chamber members, $20 for guests.

OLD PASADENA PUB CRAWL

Throughout 2019 Pasadena Heritage offers several walking tours of the city’s landmark districts. On Saturday, June 22, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., a pub crawl of Old Pasadena will be held. Starting locations and parking information will be available upon purchase of tickets.

Price for each tour is $20 non-members, $18 members.

Experience the history of a few famous and infamous Pasadena watering holes nd haunts. This guided tour of Pasadena’s original downtown includes stops at a handful of pubs, distinctive for their history, architecture and beer. Tour-goers can delight in beer tastings plus little known facts and forgotten lore – a great way to get to know historic Old Pasadena!

ORCHID SHOW AND SALE

Hundreds of beautiful orchids, many in full bloom, will be available for sale at the Orchid Society of Southern California’s Annual Orchid Auction. The auction will be held on Saturday, June 22 starting at 1 p.m. in the meeting hall of the First Christian Church, 221 South Sixth Street in Burbank. Doors will open at noon for plant inspection and bidder registration. The bidding should be over by 4 p.m.

A wide range of orchids will be available with well-grown varieties of species and hybrids suitable for everyone from the orchid novice through the advanced collector. Admission is free to all; door prizes and refreshments will be offered. Payment may be made by cash, personal check or major credit card.

MCGROARTY JUNE ART FAIR

McGroarty Arts Center is hosting its McGroarty June Art Fair on Saturday and Sunday, June 22 and June 23 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Current students, community artists and craftspeople will be sharing their artistic creations across the tree-lined upper parking area while the McGroarty Annual Ceramics Exhibition continues in the historic McGroarty building. Throughout the brunch hours, the Culinary Institute at LA Mission College will be cooking up food and beverage offerings such as a savory tacos, nachos, and thirst-quenching fruit waters under the expert guidance of culinary professor Chef Jesse. There will also be a variety of musicians providing live music for everyone’s delight.

GLENDALE BURBANK AND FOOTHILLS ASSOCIATION PLANS MEETING

The Glendale Burbank and Foothills Association hosts Glendale Unified School District board member and local politician Greg Krikorian at its meeting at the La Crescenta Woman’s Club on June 26 at 6:30 p.m. Krikorian is well known for his school board accomplishments and sound fiscal policies. He will speak on the controversial sex ed guidelines for public schools to include LGBT issues and school choice, and will inform on a variety of Sacramento’s school policies that affect every parent and student.

Parents, grandparents, friends, relatives and neighbors are encouraged to attend.

Dinner will be catered and Sonny Sardo will entertain during happy hour. The cost is $25 per person, couples $40.

IBRAHIM AND IGNOTOFSKY COMING TO FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE

On Saturday, June 29 at 5 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore presents chef and award-winning entrepreneur Mareya Ibrahim. According to Publishers Weekly, her new book, “Eat Like You Give a Fork: The Real Dish on Eating to Thrive” is filled with “thoughtful recipes

and [a] sense of humor (“Greens are your new friends with bennies”).

‘TRAVELING THE WORLD SOLO’

The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club will present Elisa Kotin’s, “Traveling the World Solo” on Tuesday, July 9 at 7:30 p.m., at the La Crescenta Library.

As an expert traveling to over 80 countries across all seven continents, Kotin from “The World Traveled” will be speaking on solo adventures and safety while traveling the globe. She will discuss research and planning and the process of getting to remote villages to interact with locals and tribesmen. Her main focus will be on remote and unique destinations including Ethiopia, Papua New Guinea, West Papua Indonesia and more. Kotin will share some of her favorite photos.

ace/121 Gallery presents glendaleOUT, a multi-venue LGBTQIA-based show, continuing through July 13. The exhibit announces the existence of the Glendale queer population, that it is visible, is viable and is part of Glendale’s narrative. It also shares with Glendale and each other the stories of coming out – either to themselves, to friends, to families, in schools, at jobs, or any other way/place/moment.

‘GAME OF THRONES’ LEADERSHIP PRESENTATION

On Friday, July 19 at 6 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse welcomes Bruce Craven, author of “Win Or Die: Leadership Secrets from Game of Thrones” (Thomas Dunne Books). PAINT & SIP AT THE LCWC

On Thursday, Aug. 8 at 7 p.m., the La Crescenta Woman’s Club is hosting a Paint & Sip night.

All are invited to create their own painted masterpiece vase while having a few drinks, hanging out with friends and meeting new people. No experience is required!

All supplies (paints, brushes, vase) are included. Guests will be walked through the painting step-by-step and will bring home their own painted glass vase.

This class is for teens and above. The price is $30 per person; $10 per reservation goes toward LCWC philanthropies. One prize drawing ticket included per reservation.

ATTENTION MUSIC LOVERS

Dr. Ted Stern, a professor of music, is again conducting a series of music appreciation classes for adults in the community. This is the 18th consecutive year of classes for non-musicians and musicians alike that explore the histories of composers and their music. The topic for this new series is “The Versatile Violin and Her Virtuosos.”

The series of classes continue every Tuesday through Aug. 6. Classes are from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Classes are held at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church cultural hall, 2700 Montrose Ave. in Montrose.

NEW BILINGUAL PROGRAM AT GLENDALE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

A new bi-lingual Armenian/English program entitled “Take Your Life Back After Cancer” is being presented at Glendale Memorial Hospital on Wednesdays from 5.30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The program is free of charge to the public.

EUBANK HAS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SHOW

Paintings, photographs and sketches from one artist’s quest to paint all the oceans in the world is on display through Aug. 1 in “Danielle Eubank | One Artist Five Oceans” at the Kwan Fong Gallery of Art and Culture at California Lutheran University, 120 Memorial Parkway in Thousand Oaks. Eubank is a Shadow Hills resident.

 

50PLUS PROGRAM AT DIGNITY

Dignity Health Glendale Memorial Hospital 50plus Program offers monthly health and fitness lectures and classes and special discounts for those age 50 and older.

An AARP Mature Driving Refresher Class is being held on Aug. 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The program is designed to refresh senior driving skills and knowledge of the rules and hazards of the road. Participants must have taken the two-day course within the three year time of previous certificate coverage to be eligible to take the one-day refresher course. The class is being held at the hospital’s Cancer Center Auditorium. The cost is $15 for AARP members, $20 for nonmembers. Check/money order must be payable to AARP. RSVP by Aug.9.

AUTRY DOCENT CLASS

The Gene Autry Museum is having a docent class on select Tuesdays and Thursdays, from Aug. 1 through Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (times may vary).

Autry docents provide guided tours of permanent galleries and special exhibitions to diverse audiences while gaining intimate knowledge of the museum and its collections. Autry docents enjoy many social and professional benefits, including Autry-sponsored parties and gatherings, monthly potlucks, field trips and more.

Autry docents conduct tours for schoolchildren one day during the week or twice a month on weekends for families and adult groups.

No experience necessary. Training includes classes in Western history, art and art history, material culture, education, touring techniques, and more. Responsibilities include providing weekly tours, maintaining active Autry membership, and participating in continuing education both at the museum and throughout the region.

A $50 program fee includes reading materials. Apply early as class size is limited.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
